I got into the honors program at IC!

I'm so happy! Has anyone else received their acceptance to the program?

I honestly was really scared... the first line was something along the lines of "We have reviewed your application to Ithaca College's honors program, and..." and it came in a really thin envelope!

Congrats! I’m in the honors program currently, so let me know if you have any questions!

Actually, I do have one big question:

What exactly are the benefits of the Honors Program? (Practical benefits)

Well first of all it’s incredibly easy. You are automatically given a minor (which, depending on your major, may be a requirement) and to fulfill it you just have to take one seminar every semester for three years. That means you get two “free semesters.” Easy, right? The classes are completely discussion based and are pretty easy if you’re a strong writer/discusser. So that’s all you have to do for the classes/requirements.

Now for the PERKS: You get priority registration. This is seriously the best thing EVER. Rather than registering at the end of the week with the rest of the freshmen when all the good classes are taken, you get to register first day, before the seniors even. So basically you will get every class you need (it’s a GODSEND, trust me). Second, you get great opportunities for trips. Two weeks ago we went to NYC and went to the MoMA and an opera. I see that you’re from NYC, so that may not be that exciting, but next month we are going to Canada to Niagra Falls and to see a play at the Shaw festival. Trips like these are offered every year to different places.

So yeah, there aren’t any downsides to the program, really. And you’ll love Bob. He is seriously the nicest guy at Ithaca, haha.

This sounds great. Writing is my favorite, so I’m sure I can fare well!

One more question (until I think of more, at least)… should I take the separate honors housing? I was thinking of dorming AWAY from the honors kids so I’m not “isolated” from the rest of the population at IC. What’s the best dorm to have?

Because of a scholarship i have, I was required to live up in terraces. Honestly, honors housing isn’t that bad. I know a group of kids that live in it that absolutely LOVE it. It really helps you create a strong bond with other kids in the program. If you’re not interested in that, i suggest the First year program. I know kids in it that loved it and it was really easy for them to meet other freshmen. Other than that, anywhere in the quads is good. Towers are loud, and terraces are mostly upperclassmen, so go quads if you can! =)

Hm, alright! Thanks a lot! I’ll probably stick to the honors housing or the Quads. :D

If you’d like, I can get you some email addresses of freshmen living in honors housing. Then you can ask them what they think. =) Just let me know and I’ll PM you them.

Chances are looking good for Ithaca… if I commit, I’ll let you know so I can ask around! Thanks! :)

i’m still waiting to be notified. do you know if they send out all their acceptances at one time? or does it come on a rolling basis?

Pretty sure it’s a rolling basis, they even said so on the invitation letter. :)

Hey KSP971,
thanks for all the info, it was really helpful, btu I have one quick queswtion about what you wrote,
you said, “You are automatically given a minor (which, depending on your major, may be a requirement) and to fulfill it you just have to take one seminar every semester for three years”

what kind of a minor are we given, do we just graduate with a minor in honor, or do we get to pick any minor that we want, which could coincide more with our major?

any response would be greatly appreciated

Unfortunately, they assign you a minor in honors. You can’t pick anything else for that title, but you are free to double or even triple minor! Most people in the honors program have two minors, but you definitely don’t have to do that. =)
