I heard somewhere that the start of duke occured because a wealthy tobacco family wanted to buy princeton but they were turned down so they set up a princeton replica in the south. Is this correct?

I am happy, so happy .......................................... YES!!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The Princeton-Duke rumor is bogus. James Duke never tried to buy Princeton.
Duke lived outside of Princeton around the time the school built their Tudor Gothic dorms (1910 or so). He liked how they added "age" to Princeton so he thought the buildings on Duke's West Campus should be in a similar style. The Princeton influence on Duke is pretty obvious, but in truth, Duke's design was also inspired by gothic architecture at Yale, Cornell, Chicago and Bryn Mawr as well. Anyway, that's the only Princeton-Duke connection.

once again, I prefer to call it the Princeton of the south.... dont get me wrong, Its a very good school and I would be happy to have the honor of going therem but its not Princeton

Congrats, semp! Duke's pretty cool. I'm still waiting to hear from a classmate and friend of mine who applied there. Great school, great school...but you're right, it's not Princeton. Unless it's your numero uno :)

That's disappointing, callthecops. I'm sure some other great universities will come through for you in the next week and you'll end up somewhere you'll love even more.....

hmm.. you know the harvard-stanford story?
[/quote]
Not sure to which harvard-stanford story you refer. There is the common quote about Stanford being the Harvard of the west (or visa versa). The Stanford "story" connects Stanford to Cornell ... Cornell was the University Leland Stanford used as the model when he started up Stanford. (The useless info I have to share today)
