I'm so excited!!! I got the call 2 days ago, and they lady told me the admissions this year was more competitive than all other years before! There were 900 applicants for the 100 seats in the freshman class!

I CAN"T believe I got in! My rank is relatively abysmbal. Its 23/704, which isn't too bad, but just keep in mind that more than 120+ valedictorians were among the 900 applicants. Also, 5 kids in my graduating class also applied to BHP--ALL with better ranks than me!

I think my EC's (officer in 4 organizations, ie. 12th grade exec. board) and 1540/2310 SAT score kept me afloat...

I also applied for the business/econ programs at Dartmouth, Cornell, Duke, Emory, Northwestern, Upenn, Stanford, and Yale.

Which programs are comparable (better/worse? Like, if I went to the BHP program at UT, do you think I'd have opportunities I'd miss at the ivies I applied too (assuming I get in)? Please write additional comments regarding job opportunities, etc.

First off Congrats!! Getting into BHP is a huge accomplishment, and I look forward to seeing you next year in our program.

BHP is excellent in terms of its quality. The teachers, curriculum, and overall help are top notch. Moreover, being in BHP gives you a huge leg up during recruiting season. Almost every interview list I saw for the big ibanks and big consulting firms (all front office work) had 9 BHP students and 1 regular finance major. So while you won't have the exact same opportunities as your Harvard and UPenn peers, you will be in great position to land a great internship and job by the time you graduate.

Moreover, the students are great here as well. A lot of other UT students (and even standard finance/business students) think we're snobs, nerds, etc. But the people in BHP are some of the most down to earth individuals you'll meet, and you'll make some life long friends guaranteed. Once again, congrats and PM me if you have anymore questions.

Unless you get huge scholarships at the other schools it would be a very poor financial decision to not attend UT. If you do feel like another school would provide you with a better quality of life during your 4 years, then that is a different story but I can't even fathom someone enjoying Ithaca, NY (for example) more than Austin.

Congrats. I'm sure many of those valedictorians were impressive, but I would just like to note that being a valedictorian, in itself, is not necessarily all that impressive. I knew a valedictorian who flunked out of college with a 0.0 gpa (partying). It turned out that his HS class size was like 12.

thank you for all of your great advice! and i'm not saying in the least bit, that i consider the bhp inferior to its ivy league counterparts. in fact, if i do choose Upenn or Dartmouth BHP, it would be purely for financial reasons. let me explain:

my parents make less than 30,000 combined together. In other words, if i got into any ivy league school, I would actually more or less go for free. The irony in that realization is, though I am a Texas resident, it would be MORE expensive for me to go to UT than for me to go to an out-of-state ivy league school (because Ivy leagues = huge financial aid, 100% need blind)!!

Nonetheless, thank you both for your awesome advice and words of congratulations. I AM EXCITED about this BHP acceptance, as it is a HUGE honor, and I still can't believe that I got accepted. If anything, i dont believe i deserve this opportunity, but i am very thankful for it.

And grandpabuzz, when you mentioned that the kids were down to earth, thats a huge pull factor for me, coz since im not really rich (my dad does non-profit work for church) that will be a huge factor for me to consider. i dont wanna go to school with snobs.

And you are choosing an ivy league becuase?

i already addressed that question: financial aid. IF i went to UT i wouldn't get much financial aid, because UT rarely offers alot of it. BUT, ivy leagues are need blind and they meet 100% of demonstrated need.

Here are my options:

Go to an ivy league school = graduate virtually debt free

Go to UT BHP = work during school, graduate several 10,000's bucks in debt.

lol.

I am sure that since you are a BHP student, you will be eligble for UT scholarships and aid. Have you received the actually financial aid notice yet with all the aid described (i.e grants/scholarships).

nope, dude on that note, i HAVEN"T seen my financial aid offer/award letter from UT. when does it come out?

I received my BHP acceptance a couple days ago, and my actual Mccombs/UT acceptance more than a month ago..when can i see my financial aid offer?! Im excited to see it, maybe i can afford to go to UT after all!

You'll find out about FA in early April. During freshman year, my family's income was also below 30K, and I got EVERYTHING covered. Tuition, books, room, everything was covered by FA. That changed a year later when my dad switched jobs, but you should be in good condition to get most, if not everything, covered.

early april hmm? but when did u go to UT grandpabuzz? r u still there right now? the reason why im asking is, im wondering if UT changed policies about even covering 100% of demonstrated need...idk i hope so.

so r u liek a senior there right now?

I got into UT February 2006, and I'm currently a sophomore now. I'm still getting about half my tuition paid for, and the FA generally correlates well w/your EFC.

Hey guys. I just signed up and this is my first post. I also got into BHP. Congrats to all. I have a couple of questions for johnlee24 or anyone else who can answer. I got the "Big Envelope" 10 days ago, and a week ago, I got a call from a current BHP freshman saying that I was invited to a BHP event. He said that I had to sign up by March 21st and that the event was April 7th. Do you know where to sign up for this or what this is?

More trivially, johnlee24, did you get a personal call before the envelope saying that you got in? That is curious?

Hey, congrats on getting in! I was accepted too. :)
You can RSVP to Discover BHP by going to the little website/URL link located on the bottom of the burnt orange RSVP card (you should've received this card in "The Big Envelope").
Hope that somewhat helps!

Thanks, lovely, I got it. Look forward to seeing you at BHP if you end up going.

yes, i got a call from a BHP sohpmore about the same time you did.

Congrats guys/ladies, i heard this year they accepted only about 180-200/900 applicants!

look, my friend has a cousin who was in BHP. he studied all throughout the week, partied hard during the weekends, and is now in NYC doing investment banking and pulling 6 figures. he graduated with close a 4.0. This example is not uncommon as BHP kids have very similar opportunities to Ivies. Maybe not as good as HYP and UPenn, but thats do more to location than anything. plus, in BHP, they pretty much "baby" you in that you dont get below Bs in any classes.

oh and i seriously doubt you will graduate from an ivy "virtually debt free". there is a lot of loopholes to that "demonstrated need" thing.

mhmm. thanks for that advice dude, i really appreciate it.

wait, could u give me more insight about BHP? do u have aim? I'd love to talk about it. i'm taking my college search really seriously, and i would love for a chance to talk ab out more of the BHP stuff if ur willing to?

hello everyone, i'm REALLY interested in getting into BHP because i know it would be too easy for me to get into the ut business school. i go to a public school in texas and i'm in the top 1% of my class. i know that ut admissions will accept all top 1% students first and then go down the applicants till the spaces fill up even if not all top 10% students get in.

what i'd like to know is like all the qualities that BHP admissions' officers will be looking at. i'm going to be a senior in high school this year and i've had four officer positions in extracurriculars, i've been involved in community service a LOT (volunteer at a museum, clinic, and hospital regularly). i have about a 1200 sat score but hope to bring that up to a 1300 the second time i take my sat.

do i have good chances of getting into bhp? what else would bhp admissions look at? and, would getting a part-time job at starbucks make my application look better, seeing that i've never had a job before in my life?

^ You will probably get a much better response on this site if you took these questions to the UT-Austin board.
