UT BHP or NYU Stern

Today i got accepted to NYU Stern and UT (in-state) Business Honors Program. I am not sure where to go since they are both great schools. Where would you guys go and why?

UT BHP. The recruitment is just as good and competition would be less cutthroat, and it's at a major fraction of the cost.

what are the strengths and weaknesses of the two colleges. From what i have read nyu is good at finace and ut at accounting

You got accepted to UT BHP!! Congrats!! Still waiting for my letter. What were your stats?

EDIT: UTA is number 5 in finance, NYU is 2 I think. UTA is also 2 in accounting.

Meh I don't think I got accepted then.

SAT: 2110, 1380 old scale. SAT II: 780 Math IIC. 33/1300 rank = 2.4% 4.2 (W) GPA, 3.85 (UW). I was in IB, IBSSA, French Club, French Honor Society, National French Exam finalist, etc. Had a good interview (I know they like leadership).

My gut feeling tells me I didn't get in though.

Really, the only reason I'd opt to go to NYU Stern would be if you want to spend your college tim in NY.

In terms of recruiting both are great but I think UT BHP might have an edge. Do you have any idea of where you want to go career wise? All the major I-Banks recruit for Wall Street positions at UT BHP, top major accounting firms, top consulting firms, etc. Even the Blackstone Group.

I'm not saying that NYU Stern is worse in terms of opportunities, I just think you might have to work harder there to distinguish yourself.

well right now, im leaning toward finance and other majors related to investing...thats why im leaning toward nyu right now. However, from what i have heard UT BHP also gets a lot of recruitment in its direction, but i dont know what type of jobs they are recruited for.

Did it say anything about admission on the online status page?

no, i got a letter in the mail today

what's with Stern being compared to all the other schools? there are 20 threads on this. I would pick Stern. It has excellent recruitment and top class education. you(sagar) seem to be pretty well qualified, so Stern must have given you something for scholarship. If not Wharton, then Stern. name recognition is something that is really important these days, and that is certainly something that Stern has. As for competition, ofcourse there is, but it is only emulating what you are going to face when you go out to the real world and look for jobs. you come out with a strong base in the major you selected.

Nobody's heard of UT? I mean no offense man, but it's not like you're actually working on wall street so I don't think you're that qualified to make a statement like that.

http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/programs/bhp/corporate/recruit.asp

Look at the top hiring companies.

I think Goldman Sachs, -Blackstone-, McK RECOGNIZE UT BHP. And Later on these kids do just fine, I know one for instance who's working at JP Morgan Private Equity. The key is to just get a good job after graduating and that's what you'll get with BHP, so again -- it's a well recognized program.

If you wanna do Investment Banking or Consulting (basically two of the hardest careers to get into out of undergrad) then you'll do great with BHP.

What this really should come down for you is not about recruitment, like I said both will have great recruiting. It should come down to cost and where you'd rather spend 4 years of college.

thanks for the advice legionaire, stern gave me $10,000, which is a lot for them, but they only give 1 year scholarships, so over 4 years that doesnt amount to much. UT BHP gave me their BHP $1,000 scholarship. I am not really worried about the money portion of it, but it is still a factor to consider.

If cost isn't a factor, you should start really looking at the different cultures of the schools. Whether you'd like a campus or an urban campus. What types of students there are, try to find out where you'd fit in better. That's probably what your decision should come down to if cost isn't going to be a factor.

Legionaire has a biased view of Stern...although Stern is #2 in finance, McCombs isn't far behind at #5. You'd have to check their stats on recruits. About how many get recruited into BulgeBracket firms and starting salaries. I'm sure they'll be comparable. The only advantage Stern has is its location and thats the only reason why its #2 really...location means a lot. You won't have a problem getting a job coming out of BHP. You'll get good hookups for internships too.

I guess it comes down to a matter of preference of location. Do you want to be in Texas on a sweet campus w/ athletics or NYU w/ NYC at your doorstep? Either way you'll be in NYC after graduation and even before too if you're doing internships.

what makes it a hard decision is the fact that i know so many people from my class and previous classes that go to UT. It would be a great "college experience", but starting over and going to NYU meeting new people in Greenwich Village looks good too. I was just wondering as far as 20 years down the road, would getting that initial job in NYC compared to that initial job in Texas make that much of a difference becuase what it seems like is that opportunities for finance and other types of investing are better in NYC. Even if i go to UT, would i just wind up at the same place in the future?

You're not understanding what I was saying. If you go to UT BHP, you will wind up working on wall street. My TA in macroeconomics was a BHP kid and wound up working for Goldman Sachs in NY. They end up with the SAME jobs.

Then afterwards, you end up with an MBA from wherever (if you're into banking then you know, a top 10 school, hell maybe even higher) the end result is that you wont be held back by your undergraduate school, especially UT BHP. Once you get that first job, everything becomes about kicking ass at that job because that's going to matter more on your resume than you're undergrad.

thanks a lot for the advice dcfca

also think about the pride factor.........

would you be PROUD of UT? what about NYU?

and the general prestige factor

how important is a non-business person's view on your school to you? most non-investment bankers would think more highly of NYU

and the campus?

NYU doesnt have one

and the school spirit?

NYU doesnt have a whole lot

What about between the regular business program and Stern in terms of job opportunities?
