I got rejected by my safety- how did this happen and what do I do now?

I logged into my portal today to find out I was not offered admission to UT Austin. Here are some stats:
52/691 rank
4.30/4 weighted
33 ACT Composite
1490 New SAT
I am in the 7.5% of my school (UT automatically accepts top 7%), I was only 9% when I applied. I have a solid amount of extracurriculars as well, and some community service. I did a little bit of digging and there is an appeal process, so how do I go about this?

Could be a number of reasons. Lackluster essays, application that contradicts transcript, essays that say different things, or even reverse affirmative action.

Use this appeal letter http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kevin-f-adler/college-decision-appeals_b_2918586.html as a guideline.

Best of luck to you.

UT wasn’t a safety for you since you weren’t auto admit.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think UT Austin is considered a safety. A safety has an acceptance rate of about 50% or higher, and your stats should be above the 75th percentile. And did you show interest? That possibly matters.

I applied to mostly out of state LAS and considered UT my safety. Average SAT for students not automatically admitted last year was 1300, and ACT for the same group was 30 (I have 1490 and 33). I’m very close to top 7% as well, so I figured it was a given

No one can assume anything these days. What is LAS?

Re appealing, I think it might be a waste of time. They will go to their waitlist if they want to admit more students.

UT is only a safety for auto admits and not a safety for even them if applying to a competitive major. You were mistaken, unfortunately. For non auto admits, admission is unpredictable.

What major did you apply for?
You can switch to a less competitive major such as undecided or education (sometimes liberal arts ) and appeal based on your new class rank.
However, UT is only a safety for students in the top 7%. (Also, it’s good to have two safeties that admit 40%+ students, are affordable, and that you like. )
You can still apply to some universities - if you list where else you’ve applied, people here can suggest similar universities still admitting students.

UT is so competitive now it is not a safety for anyone anymore. The auto admit percentage keeps going down. Get on it and apply to St. Edwards, UT San Antonio, Texas State, University of Houston, University of Dallas, or University of St. Thomas if you want an in state safety, They may still be accepting applications. Get your counselor to call and see if SMU or TCU will take a late app with your grades and scores.

Do you have any other safeties that you are waiting to hear back from? I agree with @MYOS1634 to start investigating schools similar to the schools that you applied to to see who is accepting applications .

It is worth mentioning that my first year of high school was abroad, and my GPA at that school was unweighted but transferred over and did not change (It was around 3.6 or so) and since my sophomore year I’ve taken almost all AP classes and earned only 2 B’s in an effort to bring my GPA rank up as much as possible.

UT Austin should be considered a reach for any applicant not in the auto-admit categories (in addition, those applying to popular majors should not consider it a safety for the major even if auto-admit to the school). The auto-admits take up about 3/4 of the spaces at the school, so everyone else (Texas applicants just outside the top 7% and all non-Texas residents) competes for the remaining 1/4 of the spaces.

However, since you are within the top 10%, all other Texas publics should be safeties if you are a Texas resident (although if you seek a popular major, they may not be safeties for the major).

I have one other in-state safety but I’d really rather not go there. My other schools were all liberal arts colleges out of state with relatively low acceptance rates, so I’m panicking a little. However, for the liberal arts schools I am a recruited athlete and have the coach’s recommendation which helps (UT is way too competitive for my level in my sport)

@htxscholar : can you answer the questions in #7?
Also, what’s your (annual) college budget?

I’m sorry you got denied to UT Austin. You have my sympathy. Are you looking for advice too?

I would answer the question about budget and try to find additional schools to apply to that are within your budget that would be safeties. We can help if you need it.

I applied to Business (competitive I know) and liberal arts as my second choice (which I assumed was less competitive)
budget is quite high as I’m an only child to two educated parents

what schools are still accepting applications?

Here is a place to start http://www.collegesimply.com/guides/application-deadlines/

Read the post by @Houston1021 . Looks at schools with rolling admissions. There will be a list of schools in May that still have places. It is published by NACAC.

So you meant LACs. If you are being recruited, you should get into one of them, but you should really consider putting in an app to a true safety, as per the definition I mentioned before. And show interest.

I believe that Truman State University, a public liberal arts honors college in Missouri is still accepting applications. They are rolling admissions and usually don’t fill up. They have business programs too. You should be an auto admit.

Sienna in New York is March 15, Clemson and UT Dallas are May 1.

Hendrix College (Arkansas LAC) website says they are still accepting applications.

Also, regardless of where you deposit, a list comes out May 1 with schools still accepting applications because they didn’t fill up. Every year has some surprises.
