I hate being an OOS-er

I asked for a "chance" thread before....but I didn't really get enough feedback, so here I am again!
OOS-Arizona Private; No AP classes offered: its just a college prep school.
GPA-4.0
rank-10/50
does michigan care about rank? Because mandatory art/music classes brought down my rank...everything else is straight A's.

Test scores:
SAT-2190
690 CR
780 Math
720 with 12 Essay Writing

ECs (not that many...but, hey, I work hard at each of them)
Speech and Debate: 4 years
-state champion, finalist in 3 events
-outstanding distinction
-I'll be an academic all-american (pretty big deal in the speech world, I guess)
-there's lots and lots of speech and debate stuff

Volunteer Work
-president of a charity group that raises money for victims of natural disasters: 6 years
I'm going to put down about 800 hours, but there's really around 1200 I guess.

-co-founded an environmental group: and I've won a lot of awards for "entrepreneurship" through this group: 5 years, 4 hours a week

other Random Awards/Honors/Things I did
-Girls State
-top 10% AZ state math contest
-national merit commended scholar
-biomedical research organization award
-ASU robotics summer camp

Yamaha Piano Graduate: I passed enough exams to become a piano teacher.

any ideas?

i would say match

Agreed, match. Best of luck to you If you decide to apply. :-)

Match, but I’m not sure though. You are in the top 20% of your class with a 4.0 GPA. Your SAT scores are very good.

I think the decision can go either way.

If you have a 4.0… why aren’t you ranked 1/50?

match/safety…you have solid stats and great EC’s.

Yea, blackpen thats what I’m wondering. I was going to ask if there was huge grade inflation at the OP’s college prep school

well u said that music and art classes got ur gpa down. So i am thinking ur mich gpa wuld be very good. Ur sat is pretty good too. I would say a really good shot.

I think they use weighted GPA at the OP’s school to determine ranking and OP decided to report his UW GPA.

OR

He/she calculated his Michigan GPA and so it includes A-, A+ and A. It might be that he/she had more A- than the valedictorian

How do you have an unweighted 4.0 if you didn’t get A’s in your music/art classes?

Match to safe-match. You have a very decent chance of getting in if you apply early on.

There’s not really any grade-inflation at all (we’ve only had one 4.0 in 15 years)
but the top 30% of my class is stacked–we’re all right next to each other in terms of grades

I got a B+ in freshman biology and A-'s in one semester of music and art each so my rank is pretty low.

Does michigan even look at rank? I’m trying to figure that out…

UMich doesn’t count art/music classes in its recalculated GPA. The admissions staff only looks at math, science, english, history/social science, computer science, and foreign language classes.

Yeah I think the OP calculated his UM GPA which only includes the core classes.

Spiralcloud - Michigan looks at rank to see what you’ve done with what was available to you. At 10/50 you’re still within top 20% so you are not entirely out of range (though statistically they seem to prefer top 10%). That said, strong performance in core academics will be well regarded/most important. Your ECs are just fine as they’ll prefer the depth to the width. And if your school is college prep, the ad com rep from your area is likely familiar with it. So as long as you STILL APPLY EARLY, I’d agree with Alexandre’s assessment of match - safe match.
Good luck!

How do you get a 4.0 with a B+ and an A- O_o

cause U of M doesn’t count art classes which he says he didn’t get an A in.

i say match too

and you pay money to go to a private school that doesn’t even offer AP courses? thats kind of sad.

I don’t pay to go. I’m on a full-scholarship :-)

@ yosup: I was talking about my Mich Gpa.

Ok, you should be fine. Michigan probably doesn’t accept many students from Arizona altogether though, so let’s hope you don’t have much competition.

Ever figured how many people apply from Arizona? I mean if there aren’t many people applying from Arizona, then obviously there wouldn’t be many people accepted. Many people in Arizona apply to U of Texas schools or U of California schools (referring to public schools that is).
