I have a couple of questions

I have recommended Brown University summer school to a couple of my students. They will be taking two 7 week summer courses starting the 23rd of June through the 8th of August. Although I have visited Brown several times over a decade ago, I was wondering if you could give me some information on the areas around the University itself. Is it safe and clean? Are there a lot of things to do within reasonable walking distance? Finally, how difficult does Brown make Calculus I (math 0090)?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

Q1: Yes, but don’t walk around at night alone.
Q2: Yes, besides College Hill and Fox Point downtown is only 1 mile away or so.
Q3: No idea.

I am actually an RA for the program there this summer (and a Brown student).

1) Is it safe and clean?
Mostly. It IS in an urban environment—our DPS(Department of Public Safety) works really hard to keep our campus safe and for the most part it is rather safe for a college in an urban environment—but it’s not as secluded as some suburban schools are and it’s REALLY important to stay in groups and such. This is true anywhere—but I come from a hometown with incredibly low crime rates, so this is a change for me.

2) Are there a lot of things to do within reasonable walking distance?
Yes–in addition, the program itself plans trips to places farther away with buses for Saturdays and Sundays to Boston, Newport, the beach, shopping, etc. along with college visits.

3) How difficult does Brown make Calculus I (math 0090)?
I hated and cried my way through AP Calculus and AP’ed out of this course, so I don’t know.

If I remember correctly Math 9 is very easy-- required pass/fail and 50% is required to pass though students can easily score like… 80s and 90s.

As someone who went to Brown for a two-week (high-school) program last summer, I found Providence to be a reasonably nice city. Thayer Street had a lot of shops and restaurants nearby, and from the dorm I stayed in, it was only about a 5-10 minute walk - it’s practically on campus, if I remember correctly. There’s also a mall with a movie theatre about a half-hour walk away - don’t be stupid like me and do it in four inch heels in 90 degree weather! (that was fun…) I believe the mall is downtown - there’s a lot of stuff to do around there too.

Like mentioned earlier, the program does plan a lot of activities, such as trips to Newport (DEFINITELY remember your sunscreen if you’re going to do this…), trips to visit colleges, and more. When I was there, the RAs planned a party for us on a friday or saturday night, and there was a salsa dance workshop or something too that a lot of people went to, so there’s always something to do, on campus or off.

You walked up college hill in four inch heels?

****, I’m a guy and I feel like I need to give you a medal.

Politica must have nice calves! hehe!
