Hello all. So I was chosen as one of the 100 finalists for the goodnight scholarship. I applied to NC State as a chemistry major to fulfill the Pre-Pharmacy requirements. On the General application in Pack Assist I wrote about how my inspiration in pharmacy stems from observing pharmacists help improve my mother’s quality of life when she had a life-threatening illness. I also said that I plan to open up my own chain of pharmacys to educate patients on their medication. After talking to pharmacists and thinking it over I no longer want to pursue pharmacy. My goal remains the same to improve the quality of life for others. I now want to puruse computer science. After taking a computer science course I learned more about coding and programming in my own time. I believe this where my true passion lies. Now I want to learn even more about computer science and use the skills I acquire to assist nonprofit organizations and land a software engineering/development job. I have the interview at State on Saturday. I’m afraid of them asking about my major and pharmacy. I don’t want to appear as if I’m not good at planning and setting my goals as this is most likely something they look for when selecting recipients. I also don’t want to appear indecisive. I’m afraid they may ask about pharmacy and I really don’t know how to approach explaining how I don’t want to puruse it anymore. I’m really stressed about the interview now and I’m not sure what to do. Any advice is much appreciated. Also if anyone has any experience with the goodnight scholars program and interview pointers or other information your advice is much appreciated and welcomed.

A huge percentage of kids change their major at some point along the way.
Your goal remains the same, and it’s an altruistic one. It’s simply the path to that goal that has changed. Explain it to them the way you’ve explained it to us-- that you’ve found a different way to help people.

Explain that your goal remains the same but you’re now unsure about the best way to get to it as you’ve been thinking of other majors you could pursue to reach that goal. It’s perfectly normal for a HS senior to be wondering about majors and you’ll show your ultmate goal hasn’t changed.
Almost all of my friends changed their majors in college, so don’t worry about it. You express yourself really well, so you’ll be fine. 
Congratulations on making it to the finalist stage. As everyone has said, I would not worry about it. Talk about your goals but there are more than one paths to get you there. It is understandable that a HS student may change major and won’t be the first or last time this happens. Good luck!
