i have a problem

i am a sophmore and have been a decent student up till now... I take honors classes and have one AP this year....this quarter things didnt go so well and i got the first 2 d's of my life i usually dont even get c's....what will this do to my college hopes....i plan on getting strait A's and working quite hard the rest of the year to make up for it....same with juniour year since it is the most important...what are my chances of even getting in a decent college now

please help im really freaking out and there is no time to fix it

It would be better if u got those D's as a freshman, b/c many colleges really look to see if you progress or at least stay constant in terms of your GPA the farther into your high school career.

You could probably say goodbye to the Ivy Leagues, the Dukes, the Northwestern's, the Stanford's of the country.

Also depends on where you want to go. You haven't told us what type of school you would want to go to. I know you're a sophomore, but what schools or types of schools did u have thoughts of looking at in the future?

It's possible to get back on track, but I mean you'd really have to make drastic improvement every semester.

D's are bad. C's would be fine, but D's, and more than 1, ouch. Gonna be tough to explain that to good colleges.

the colleges i have thought about so far are st.marys college maryland and university of maryland baltimore county i was never really thinking i even had the slightest shot at IV leagues do you think those schools are still within reach?

Quit obsessing over it; what's done is done. And what will be for you will be. Do your best, enjoy life, find things you are interested it, seek out your passions and work hard to learn (not to earn the grade). No matter where you end up, you will be happier than the person who makes themselves crazy over a gpa. It's ok.

If you had no intention of going to the ivies or the best schools than just quit obsessing. There is no reason to waste your life over a couple of Ds.

I think you've still got shots at Maryland, I don't know about this St. Marys College just cause I'm not exactly sure what they accept, but Maryland would probably be within reach, AS LONG AS YOU SHOW IMPROVEMENT. IF YOU IMPROVE AND GET A'S, B'S THE REST OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER, YOU SHOULD BE ALRIGHT.

It was a bad semester, true, but colleges look to see if you can improve your GPA. Obviously, you're concerned about college and that's good.

I think it should be a concern, but like the other person said, what's done is done. Nothing can be changed, you just gotta work your ass off the rest of the way.

Junior year is the most important year. Unfortunately, grades/GPA is important to get into college, well good colleges, so I think you should be concerned, but don't freak out, it'll only make it worse.

Just gotta get through adversity. That's what makes people succeed in life. I had a D- in a Math class in my sophomore year with a week left in the grading period. I could've freaked out, could've given up. But there were 2 tests that final week. I ended up raising my grader over 20% to a B-.

i know i know and ive come to terms with it i was just wondering how much will it affect a college accepting me if they see it but i improve the next quarter...i wanna get into theese colleges and if i dont get into st.marys which isnt easy to get in then id like to get a scholarship to umbc not a full ride or anything....all i wanna know is how bad is it looking for me right now

It's not looking great, b/c I assume your GPA went down from your freshman year to your first semester sophomore year.

But, with dedication, with work and good grades, you can get back into the hunt for these schools. Also, try to make sure to be in some club or organization, or student council for a few years to show that dedication. That'll probably be even more important than for others b/c you're gonna need others ways to impress the College Board people who review your applications. You'll have to write a good essay in your application if they ask you to write one.

Overall, just improve. Improve to how you were freshman year, and next year(junior year), you've gotta maybe improve a little more or stay constant. Junior year is the critical year for many, many schools. But defintely show major improvement this 2nd semester here.

On some applications they give you a chance to explain weaknesses on your transcript, if you wish to. Of course the best thing is to just yank up the grades and keep them that way, and all it will look like is a bad moment in soph year. UMBC has seen that before, I'm sure. My D got into a very selective school and she had a roller-coaster year with transcript that read a "D" one quarter and then "A" the next (because she put all her heart and soul into that course the next time around). Of course by the year's end it wasn't a great grade for the course...but it showed she could flip it back up. When that happens, colleges can think, "oh, his dog probably died that semester..." So I'd say put every ounce of energy into those two courses next quarter (without letting the other ones slip back!!). Maybe pull back on some socializing or whatever you think caused you to go down to D this time. Maybe get tutoring, or see teachers after school.... You can do this, and it will NOT ruin your chances. From a former Baltimorean...

Do you guys suppose submitting commonapp one or two days late will significantly hurt our application ? I mean hurt REAL BAD, say they will look on our application with a very jaundice eye or ignore it ? And if we submit late, will they still download it ?

...bump...
