I have a question...

Ok so I'm pretty bad at math. I want to go to an Ivy League school one day (major in English Lit, fyi) but I have a feeling that my math will hold me back a little, in terms of acceptance. I'm in Geometry as a tenth grader (sucks, I know) and I want to graduate with AP Calc. My guidance counselor won't let me test out of Pre-calculus so I can get into Calc my senior year. Is there anyway that I can secretly take AP Calc on my own and get the credit? Is that self study thing really legitimate? I bought an AP Calc AB/BC book (PR). If I just learn all of the math in the book, take the test and (hopefully) pass, will the school that I'm applying to count it as if I took the class?

Or does Calc not really matter for an English major?

To the best of my knowledge, if you take the AP test without taking the class, colleges will most likely recognize that you are capable of higher level math, but “AP Calculus” will not appear on your transcript, thus you not actually “taking the class.”

But then again… if you claim to be bad at math, don’t try to self study Calculus… chances are, it won’t go that well.

why the hell would you have to secretly self-study for an AP credit? is somebody threatening you or something?

Set lower goals

“I swear, if you ****ing solve for the derivative of 3cosx^2, I will rape your couch”.

hahaha.

EDIT: Current AP Calc student.

-6xsinx^2

From a current AP Calc student.

^That is how you trick people into doing your hw. hahah. Jk :P

EDIT: It would actually be -6xSinx^2 :P.

Haha, no drummerdawg, my gc just doesn’t won’t let me take AP Calc before graduation…which sucks either way…

What about AP Statistics?

Excuse me for my lack of capitalization… I have an AP Calc quiz today

I know that now may not be the best time

But I tried that and got -6cosxsinx. Did I do something wrong or.

Well in 9th grade, my geometry teacher and my GC wouldn’t let me skip Pre-calc so that I could take AP Calc AB the next year. I mean, I was pretty mad when this happened so here’s what I did.

I enrolled in pre-calc for sophomore year, and took the course. But towards the end of April, about 2 weeks before the AP exam for Calc, I started to self-study it. I actually finished learning all of Calc AB 2 days before the AP exam. I then reviewed, and managed to come out with a 5 on the exam.

Then during the summer when we got our scores, I contacted my GC and showed her my AP exam score. At this point, she had to put me in AP Calc BC for my junior year because it would be extremely stupid if she made me take the class for AB AFTER I got a 5 on the exam.

So this was my way of bypassing “the system”. However, you mentioned that you weren’t very good at math so this may not work for you. Math has kinda been my strong point :D

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Excavalier you did 3cos^2x, but you would be right (I think…)

I think you interpreted it as 3cos(x)^2, and the others looked at it as 3cos(x^2)… just at first glance.

(that was at excav btw)

Hmmm well idk.

the internet is so misleading

Bioboy, I call bs on your story. There is no way you mastered all of Calc AB, in presumably under 2 weeks. If so, that must mean I can fly. I’m gonna go find a nice cliff to test this theory out. Goodbye all.

EDIT: Accidental double post.
