Don’t get me wrong - I like my school and I have great friends, I’m not homesick or anything, I’m actually glad to be out of the house… the thing is… I want to go into career fields that doesn’t require college and I feel like I’m wasting my time here while I could be working towards my career goals (I want to be a body piercer and a cosmetologist/hairstylist). 4 years just seems like a long time to be working towards a degree I don’t plan on using…
Then finish this semester with good grades so you have some credits to transfer if you change your mind later. And go try out what you think you want to do.
Research what training you need for your carrier choice and transfer at semester to a school that offers that training.
You don’t need a college degree for those professions, but there are training programs and certifications needed that vary by state.
I honestly don’t know how a person can do well at university if they don’t want to be there. As such, I am inclined to agree with @intparent: Do as well as you can for this semester. Then do what you want to do.
I think that there is some chance that you will change your mind and want to go back to university at some point. When that happens, having one good semester will be a LOT more helpful than having one bad semester, and the colleges and universities will still be there.
Getting a college degree gives you the most options in life. What if you wanted to manage a body modification store? What if you wanted to learn tattooing? What if you wanted your own place? Having business or art background would be helpful.
Also I assume you are around 18 years old. You may like piercing/cosmetology but you may like other things you don’t even know about that you could learn about at college.
I agree with bopper that getting a business degree would be helpful. Without a degree, you can get stuck working for other people for the rest of your life. This can get old pretty quickly. What about seeing if you can get a part time job in a salon or piercing place while you are in school?
Actually with a degree your more likely to get stuck working for someone else, with a trade skill your more likely to start your own business.
Of course you are right CU123. People with a trade skill start businesses all the time. I think the poster should think through their options before they leave college though, as having a degree could be offer more choices in the future.
We must be right around the time of the first exams for the semester, about 4 weeks in. There are an awful lot of posts from folks who want to walk away from college.
Study anyway. Hopefully, it will be better next week after the exams are over. Right now you’re in the heat of battle so fight. At the end of the semester, if you want to drop out, drop out and pursue the career that you want.
The fact remains that you’re more likely to make money during your lifetime with a degree than without one.
Major in art, so you can become better at tattoos, if that’s something you choose to add to your repetoire. Or in cosmetology. Or in business, so that some day you can own your own shop.
