I have one "W" on my transcript...will this affect my chances?

I am a student at a California community college about to start my sophomore year, and I have excellent grades. However, I am extremely worried about one W that I received in a statistics class in the fall. I was unfamiliar with the ins and outs of IGETC and the transfer admission process in general. I realized too late that I was in the wrong statistics class. I decided for some reason that it would be better to drop and take a W and retake the different stats class later, rather than struggling through an unneeded course while compromising my other grades in the process. I read on a different thread that UC's do not really pay attention to W's, but now I know that I want to transfer to a private school--preferably a small liberal arts college, with a few large universities thrown into the mix. I began freaking out today though, because someone informed me that USC does not allow people with W's to apply. Is this true? I have been searching every corner of their website trying to find this information, but I haven't had any luck. Can anyone ease my mind/break my fate to me gently? It would be greatly appreciated! If anyone knows the policies regarding W's at small LAC's (ie. Bates, Mt. Holyoke, Sarah Lawrence, ConnCollege, Whitman, Bryn Mawr, Occidental, etc.), that would be extremely helpful as well. Thank you!

If you have an excellent GPA and one W, you’ll be fine. USC will let you apply if you have ten W’s. The more W’s, the harder it is.

I don’t think one w will have much of an impact.

I had one W and applied to USC and got in. I was in a math class that I didn’t need and dropped it. When you apply there is usually a spot somewhere on the application to write in any extra info (don’t take up valuable application space describing this situation- just use the “extra space” section) that you feel is important or that the admissions committee should know. It should take no more than three sentences to describe the dropped class. It will especially help if you have already taken the other stats class upon doing your transfer application, or if the class is in progress. In the end, it won’t hurt you at all. Just keep strong grades.

I applied as a first year to transfer and had a W (therefore was only submitting 3 grades!!) and was accepted to great schools, I gave no explanation though. I think schools understand that sometimes you just have to withdraw.

i also had a W and will be attending UNC

I had a W and I am going to Vanderbilt. Colleges do not expect you to be perfect. It is not out of the ordinary for people to graduate with one or two W’s. Sometimes people drop a class because they realize they don’t need it for the major they are in and want to focus on other courses. Don’t worry about one W, focus on the things you do have control over…like GPA, essay(s), recs. Good Luck!

I took an extra class my spring before transfer (6 overall) dropped math b.c it was too much with the other class, and it was no problem with USC. I didn’t explain it on the app as I already sumbitted before the W. But it doesn’t hurt to mention why if you have good reasons to.

I actually had 7 W’s and got accepted into USC! CHEERS

yup same one W freshman year and got accepted to washu and nyu

@Patriot1208 Hey, did you end up retaking the course you got the W in and do well, or were you accepted without having to retake?
