Hello. I attend Santa Monica College and I'm planning on transferring to USC for fall 2010. I was wondering if I have 4.0 GPA but have one "W" (withdrawal), then would it hurt my transfer admission to USC? Anyone was in this kind of situation but got accepted? Since I don't want to get a spring grade request, I would like to know if this one "W" leads me to get a spring grade request. I heard that, unlike UCs, USC counts against if transfer applicants have "W" on their transcript. I would appreciate if you respond!

As long as you explain why you have one in your application, I don’t think it should count against you in a major way. I believe there were a few people last year that had several W’s that were accepted.

If you have 4.0, you should be thinking about Ivy’s not W’s.

I remember one person here applying to Marshall, the business school of USC. He has an awesome resume, 3.86 gpa and 2W’s. He was rejected, W will look really bad on your app, but every school have their own approach when it comes to evaluating for admission. I hope i see you there, SC is my first choice too and I will be applying the same time as you.

His rejection wasn’t solely because of his withdrawal record (although those W’s surely weren’t beneficial to his admission packet). USC’s Marshall is now ranked as the 10th best undergrad business school in the nation, so it’s assumed that the admissions process would be highly competitive. NYU’s Stern school of business was around that same area during the spring 2010 period, and they rejected students with 4.0’s and great experience.

As far as you, lych, I’m sure one W won’t break you.
