I know my chances are slim, but I have to try....

2240 SATs, moderate ECs, absolutely no sports here. Class valedictorian, from a state that sends not too many kids away from the east coast, least of all to Chicago. Why did I get in, early action? I’m interesting, I know I’m interesting, and I was able to prove to the adcom that not only am I interesting, but I’m interested in Chicago, and not for prestige. I was able to prove I had interests, not merely scattered ones, and that I was in it for the long haul. Also, essay writing is sort of my forte.

Do this. But you should definitely apply–the worst that will happen is that you’ll be out $65 and you’ll be rejected. Sounds like a big deal, but trust me, it isn’t; you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be in the end. You can’t be accepted to the University of Chicago without applying to it. :]

Hello! I’m an admitted student for the Class of 2013, and I just wanted to give you some food for thought.

When I applied, I had similar statistics (32 ACT, 740 V, 560 M, 690 W), although I had taken more APs (3 by junior year, taking 4 more senior year). My GPA (weighted) hovered at 4.29 for nearly all 4 years, which unweighted probably wasn’t all that spectacular, as I’d gotten B’s in 2 of my APs and 2 of my honor math courses. I wasn’t in the Top 5 of my class, but I was in nearly every extracurricular, was in charge and had a huge leadership post in nearly all, and was passionate about what I was doing and what I wanted.

That said, I applied to a myriad of schools, and got a mixed bag of results (waitlists at BC, Georgetown, and Columbia, denied at Vandy, JHU, Stanford, and finally got scholarship $ from NYU and FSU Honors). I applied to UChicago early honestly not expecting much, knowing its reputation. But, like I said, I’m passionate and I made everything really personable. I got in, obviously, that’s why I am here.

What did college admissions show me? Schools that have a generic approach to admissions didn’t want me. I am convinced Chicago accepted me based on my passion and variety and who I am as opposed to other schools, who simply look at your laundry lists of scores.

Good luck, and let yourself shine in your essays. Take a risk, which is easy to do with Chicago’s essays (I talked about economics, baseball, my own home city, refugees, and how everyone thought I was crazy for wanting to go to Chicago). Be passionate, and be you.

Whereweanchored- Thanks for the insights, but I took one AP Sophomore year, Three AP’s Junior year, and now for Senior year I have 8, so I have taken a very tough courseload.

I am applying Early Action to UChicago, and hoping for the best. I will definitely tell you all if I get in, get waitlisted, get deferred, or get plain out rejected!
