Notes:

+The rank and GPA are according to the data from January 2007. I was ranked 5th then, however, I believe that there is a substantial possibility of moving up one rank.
+I will update the AP scores once they come out. Here are the projections: USH (4-5), Biology (4), Chemistry (3-4), English Language (5).
+I'm expecting to raise the SAT scores to the following: 750 CR, 760 M, 800 W (2310)
+The SAT II scores are horrible, I know. Am I required to send all scores? If not, I'd like to keep the Bio score to myself. Hopefully after studying, I'll get 780-800 for both USH and Math IIC.
+The reason that I dropped the Science Olympiad, Key Club and Student Council after my sophomore year is that I realized that I wasn't passionate about them. I just did them to keep myself busy and somewhat for college purposes.
+I'm expecting to make All-Region Band and All-State Band next year also.
+I also attended 4 leadership retreats with the Band.
+I performed at UT Recital Hall and churches.

SAT II (how will these scores affect?): 690 USH (will retake), 670 Biology, will take Math IIC

I'm in the same boat, except mine are a bit higher. I don't think you should worry about it.

ok cool tks

It doesn't help that you're an Asian male, I must say. Your extracurriculars look like you did all of them just for college; it seems like you have too many. You have a good chance of getting into Wharton if you apply ED, esp if you're essay is good, but it's not a definite.

Dull ECs. Targeted for college, no passion. Scores are below-average for an Asian Male with typical ECs. I don't see you getting in.

it's very interesting to see how people are intentionally discouraging
other people.

Becuase i think his profile is wonderful and have great ECS
(yeah, they might be targeted for college, but wharton needs those kinds)
But SAT II scores..yeah.

People on this board are such haters sometimes especially when it comes to chances.
Do you have a chance? Yes; I believe you can make it into Wharton
Is it definite? Absolutely not
Are your ECs college targeted? To some extent yes; however, you have many musical ECs you can come off as the musical type..though im sure many do .. you have things like all state and so forth.
...Your SATs are clearly in range; it's really up to your essay...so I think write an amazing essay and hope for the best.

the outcome is gloomy...

The average ENROLLED SAT for Wharton hovers between 1430-1450 from year to year. That for accepted is probably around 1500. Your 1400 is a tad low for Wharton. GOod luck.

aewon: Your SAT scores are not bad at all. You have excellent shots. People are discouraging you because they don't wish you to apply and compete with them. Many people get accepted have lower SAT scores than you. In fact, I saw some students having 2300+ got rejected on University of Pennsylvania forum. I strongly recommend you to apply. Your musical talents are pretty promising. Apply ED if you have time to develop your essay. I recommend you to pick out certain important ECs instead of listing them all. Also, just send two recommendations; don't bother to send three because the two teachers you choose should know you well enough to write decent recommendations.

Why don't people just look at the stats? His scores, combined with profile, make Wharton a big reach. This isn't mean, just true.

Because the stats are an average ..let's say it's from the 25-75 percentile..with those SAT scopres...that still means 25% of the people have lower SAT scores...just because your scores are below average doens't mean a school is a big reach...and ivy league schools take a hollistic approache to applications.

His score is bad? I think 2200 is an excellent score that matches University of Pennsylvania's SAT average. It might be slightly lower for Wharton but it doesn't mean this applicant will be automatically rejected. University of Pennsylvania likes high SAT scores, but they love high ranking/percentile even more!

aewon: I would reiterate, that you have decent chances for early admission. Pick out some good ECs instead of listing them all down. Develop your essays with GREAT AMOUNT OF TIME and show what you truly love to do. I wish you the best. Ignore those ultra-negative comments; believe in yourself.

"Dull ECs. Targeted for college, no passion."

-what the hell kind of ECs AREN'T seemingly geared towards college? this is so frustrating for me because I have similar activities but I didn't just do them for college...

PKswmr76: Don't listen to them. All these activities are fine. People won't know what others feel unless those people "stand in other people's shoes" and "see things from other people's perspective". Those brouhaha-sayers are destined to discourage you.

Most students are doing what I call conventional ECs, such as clubs, sport captains, etc. I'm not saying those ECs are bad. I am saying that all sorts of ECs are fine. I am not a treasurer or prime minister of any club, and I am not worried. I volunteer at local library and teach kids to read and I think it's an excellent leadership role. ECs don't have to be those conventional ECs. Think outside the box. ^_^

?
thanks iappler.
and keep in mind that i am going to retake the SATs... and SATIIs as well.

but... what are you guys talking about? ec's "geared for college"?
i was selected by faculty to participate in the leadership committee and ap mentorship.
interact i wanted to do because i wanted to expand rather than focus on school activities.

band and orchestra are just what i'm good at.
please explain :(

I don't think you have a good chance getting in, just as I don't think I have a "good chance" to get in. There are very few students whom I see having good chances at crazy selective schools, Wharton being in the realm of HYPS selectivity. A Hawaiian military kid posting on the Stanford thread is one of those few that I think can get in anwhere...Anyway, ED will help, and a 2310 will be impressive (but I planned to boost my SAT score and actually dropped in Math and CR) if you get it. But Penn's average around 1430 is probably a bit higher at Wharton.

The honest truth that you must hear is your chances are small - frickin' 500 kids in a class!!! But by all means DO NOT let that discourage you from applying ED. You are a high achieving student, and not in the realm where an app fee would be a waste of $$$. I'm hoping you are applying since it is your absolute top choice (some CC kids do it to boost chances), and if it is, convey that as best you can in the "Why Penn" essay. Penn loves kids who love their school - it generally contributes to a happy campus atmosphere.

Good luck.

thank you for your honestly, padfoot.

still waiting for some explanation on why my ec's are "geared for college"

thanks

As you've written them here, your EC's don't show anything unique or passionate. Do you know how many Asian kids there are here who were in the orchestra and NHS? These things are a dime a dozen in today's society, and simply don't show Penn anything attractive about you.

NHS, Rotary, "Leadership", "Honor", "Merit" - these are all things that are ******** titles bestowed on over-achieving HS students. Sure, you may deserve the award but the state of the industry is that they're watered-down titles that really don't carry the weight they may have at one time. Your ECs seem to fall into two categories: instrumental music and "leadership". The former is all too common at a place like this; the latter is a load of baloney.

I don't know if this is actually what you are; this is just how you've presented them. Maybe you really do love practicing clarinet all night and it's not something your parents made you do. If so, try to convey that. I apologize if this sounds brash, but you did ask for it, over and over again.
