I know you're sick of threads like this, but Chances for a Kansas kid?

Age: 17

Location: Wichita, Kansas

Class: 2010 (going to be a senior)

GPA: 3.74 Unweighted 3.94 Weighted

AP/Honors: English 9,10,11 Honors, AP US History, Biology Honors, Chemistry Honors, Took Algebra 2 as a freshman.

Got a 4 on AP US History Exam.

ACT: 34 English and Reading - 34
Math and Science - 33

EC's: 3 years football, 2 years tennis, 3 years marching band, 2 years concert band, 1 year Business Professionals of America, 3 years NHS, Boy Scouts (not an Eagle yet), 2 years of Model United Nations, Church Group Leader for 1 year, Newspaper (sports editor).

Plan on doing ROTC so that takes care of tuition, but I have a full ride to TCU and A&M so I probably won't go to Vandy unless I get it down REAL cheap.

Other schools I'm looking at, in order:

TCU, Oklahoma State (cheap as heck), Duke, University of Illinois (cold!)

Texas A&M, West Point, Air Force Academy, Vanderbilt

Baylor

Kansas State

Plus,

Class Rank is 51/480 weighted (this is how my school “officially” judges), and 90/490 weighted.

I don’t know about the other branches but if you’re Air Force, full tuition is hard to come by - usually they give out type II scholarships (15k tuition).

Vandy will cover 100% of your need, though, so if your parents are median income or below you’ll get it close to a full ride - between median and 100k you’ll probably have most to all tuition covered (but not room and board) and between 100k and 200k you’ll have some tuition covered and above 200k you’re not likely to get much of a need award unless you have siblings that are undergrads or something.

As far as getting in, I have no idea. I think you’re above average in stats, but I’ve heard of people getting rejected with better stats than yours, so who knows. Also, don’t forget that Vandy accepted more than half of their transfer applicants this past fall so if you’d really like to go there, but don’t get in, you can always think about transferring after your first or second year.

Also, I STRONGLY recommend not doing ROTC unless you actually want a military career or the experience or to give back to your country. Especially not the corps or whatever at Texas A&M - I had a friend do that and he was into all that stuff, but it’s really not worth all the time and effort if you’re only after the money when you consider colleges that cover all of your need.

If this need thing sounds a bit foreign to you, you really need to read up on FAFSA, EFC’s and colleges than meet 100% of demonstrated financial need.

I just read you’re into the Air Force Academy - really REALLY don’t go to an academy unless you want a military career (it’ll help you make political connections that will help you achieve Colonel and General and whatnot). I’ve talked to several academy grads at Little Rock AFB last summer and they said things like “Those 4 years at the academy flew by like a penguin” and “It was a good experience, but if I had to choose it over again, I’d go the ROTC route and have a somewhat normal college life.”

If you want to be a pilot, you should go to the Air Force Academy because for ROTC cadets, pilot slots are competitive (based on your AFOQT scores, commander’s rec, grades, PT scores, etc.) but EVERYONE who graduates from the Air Force Academy that is minimally qualified to fly will be allowed to…

If you don’t want to heed my warning and still are after just the cost - be an electrical engineer as your declared major when you apply for your Air Force ROTC scholarship - it’ll greatly increase your chances of getting a full tuition scholarship. Army is a lot easier to get a full-tuition scholarship. Both of my room-mates my freshman year in college were on 100% tuition army scholarship and they performed worse in the classroom and on the PT tests. In fact, almost every cadet in the Wabash Battalion was on a full scholarship (I believe the only one who wasn’t was a foreigner who wasn’t allowed to be on it).
