I lost track of my classes!

I need some help really bad...I don't fully understand the whole system of UC class yet.

Unfortunately, I didn't do well on either of the placement exams so it looks like they are placing me in BSWT003 for English and Math005 (Pre-Calc) for math for my upcoming enrollment in Fall quarter.

It's quite late when I get the AWPE letter in mail which is few days before the first section of summer school starts.

Well, regular incoming freshmen are supposed to take ENGL 1A and Math 9A, am I right?
Right now I don't know what course to take in section 2.

Can students who are placed in BSWT003 take ENG 1A during summer to satisfy their Entry Level Writing Requirement? If not, what English class am I supposed to take? ENGL004 ???

For math, can I enroll in a community college to take Math005 (w/ transferable credit of course) while attending UCR???

Also when I'm trying to search for summer courses, most ENGL ones like ENGL 1A and ENGL004 have pre-requisites. How am I supposed to register for them?

First of all – “regular” incoming freshmen are at all levels of Math and English. It is not the end of the world if you get placed into something different because you WILL have time to finish it within four years. While everyone’s English requirements are the same, the Math requirement/placement can vary greatly depending on your major.

The English sequence is:
BSWT003 -> ENGL004 -> ENGL001A -> ENGL001B -> ENGL001C

The math sequence varies greatly, and A LOT – both science/math AND humanities majors – get placed into MATH005.

I’m just trying to make this clear: You are in no way “deficient” if you start out at lower levels than you would’ve liked. EVERYONE is at a different level in these subject areas and these classes are designed to help you improve, no matter what level you are at.

Second – It would be difficult (I’m not sure if it’s impossible) to try and get these core requirements done at a CC, because it usually isn’t at the same standards of the UCs. They will be more strict with those requirements than if you were trying to take an Art History class at a CC to fill breadth requirements.

Third – If you want to do concurrent enrollment at UCR and a CC, you have to go and fill out forms and get it approved at the office of the dean of your college.

Fourth – You have to get the prerequisites done for those courses. You can refer to the English sequence I listed above. For math, look at this previous post: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-riverside/730882-math-4-vs-math-5-a.html
