CMU is out so it looks like it’s ysu for me.
Really, I’m so pleased you are able to attend YSU at such an affordable price and avoid a gap year.
i’m happy too! was really hoping CMU would come through but there’s always transfer.
aarh, I really hoped CMu would come through.

Perhaps Hampshire - they’re part of the 5-college consortium which might help you get into Amherst (you can take a course there each semester) but they’re not for everyone. It’s very hippie crunchy weedy. You design your own course of study, you don’t have grades, you have access to 4 other colleges including the great UMass Amherst but also top LACs Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Amherst. Like these, Hampshire has money (although not as much as the others). You could do what you’re interested in and benefit from the consortium before trying to transfer elsewhere.

Basically you can apply to the “free to apply” colleges and see what they can offer. You’ve got an excellent offer (financially and academically) at YSU, even if the city isn’t all great
ran the NPCs on most of these and they aren’t really worth it over the cost benefit of YSU. again, i could always transfer, but i’m not sure how to do that or how to prep for it. i’d really like to study film in undergrad even if it’s in conjunction with a more employable major.
With your intelligence, tenacity, flexibility, and level-headedness I have no doubt you will be successful. YSU is lucky to have you. Go out and make the most of your opportunities there!
And looking forward you may want to consider a semester abroad or at another school and you may be able to pursue some coursework in an area that is not available at YSU (just be sure it is approved by YSU first). Often for an abroad program run by your college your financial aid will remain intact for the program. Just something to keep in the back of your mind for now.
At this point YSU may be your best bet but I checked dePauw and they do have a film major/minor with screen writing and production courses. Hampshire has film& video production. Earlham has film studies.
You’ll do well at YSU and will have lots of opportunities so I’m only bringing those up because I’d said I would and you might want to “know” so that you have no regrets.
I agree that often study abroad is at the same cost at studying at your home college AND Honors students get special scholarships to make travelling easy (look up YSY Global Honors on youtube).
ty! i looked into hampshire but it would still be 6k out of pocket and depauw was still more so while the film and video production looks nice i might just have to pursue that in a transfer or in graduate school.
Congratulations!
I think your attitude is all wrong. We all have dreams and ideas about what we want in life. I would start where you can and make the best of available resources. Are you the first in your family to go to college? Did you explore that option? Many kids are applying to college every year, and I would try to make the most of whatever you can get into.
i’m a little confused by your comment, @fauxmaven . i am starting where i can and making the best of my available resources. it would be unwise to go to a school that would cost me more than i would make after graduating. but it is also unwise for me not to at least look at the NACAC list and see if there are not better options available to me. i am not the first in my family to attend college, but neither of my parents have a four - year degree. i am trying to make the most of YSU at least for my first two years, and if i can affordably transfer for an institution that will let me pursue an additional passion or will open more doors to me, i see nothing wrong with considering that or thinking about the long term.
you are doing a great job! You turned your situation around so quickly.
Hampshire sounds very interesting. I was telling my son about the 5-college consortium yesterday, but couldn’t remember the fifth school. One regret I have about his search was not spending more time on LACs because he was looking for engineering. It all worked out okay, but at this in between time it’s hard not to overthink a little.
was Hampshire $6K more per year or total after 4 years? It would be worth the former as part of the 5 school exchange it has access to all the course offerings and programming at some great colleges, but its in the middle of nowhere and I think you wanted a city.
The two schools on the NCAC list that jumped out to me were Ohio Wesleyan and University of Dayton. I know nothing about film offerings at either, but know people who attended them and loved them both.
I think it will be hard to beat what you have at YSU. At this point, I’d be reading the entire YSU website and compiling a list of positives about the school and about offerings you would like to take advantage of once there. Find some clubs that you want to join. Sell yourself on it and go in with the most positive attitude possible. Who cares what Youngstown is like - you will be so involved on campus. And Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburgh arent very far - you can spend time in those cities if you need a break from campus.
You have had a wonderful attitude through all of this and made so many things happen for yourself after you weren’t happy with your initial admissions. You reached out to many different schools and ended up with a strong and affordable option at YSU. You’ve been smart and practical and considered many different factors. So impressed by how you’ve handled yourself!
It makes sense to look at the schools on the NACAC list, but now you’ve done that and determined that YSU is a better option for you (unless there’s any that @MYOS1634 mentioned that you haven’t checked, but it sounds like you checked them all). I agree that looking forward at YSU and what you want to get involved in there is good. Study abroad could be wonderful if that worked for you. Take a look at the course catalog and see what you’re looking forward to taking and what you’d like to register for this fall. Make sure you know (you probably do) the deadlines for things like course selection, submitting housing preferences, etc.
Wishing you a wonderful college career!
@ACollegeHopeful3 you have had a great attitude throughout this whole process. Not sure why that statement was made. I’m so sorry that CMU didn’t workout for you but maybe in a couple of years it will. Good luck to you because we know you’ll do great wherever you go. YSU May turn out to be these school ever for you.
@ACollegeHopeful3 Wholeheartedly agree that you’ve had a very mature and positive attitude throughout this process. In the future, you may decide to transfer, or not, and if that’s something you want to keep open, I’m sure you’ll approach it with the same tenacity as you have with this first go-around.
But right now, you’ve got YSU Honors, a financially sound package, and are avoiding a gap year. Woot woot!
@ACollegeHopeful3 : how is it going? Have you found a job?
Check your personal messages btw.
just wanted to update everyone and i saw my PM, and am very grateful for the help. found a summer job through a volunteer opportunity that i’m very happy with and it will definitely help pay for books and other needed supplies. ursinus has offered another financial aid revision and i have accepted it but it has been over a month and with getting their confirmed students ready for fall i have not heard anything back, so am preparing as if i am going to youngstown. i have orientation soon and am planning on adding poly sci as a double major and am very happy with it all. not sure if i will stay all 4 years or try to transfer but i know i’m in the best place i can be with the outcome of the 2018 college decisions and am so grateful for everyone’s help!
I can tell you that Ursinus isn’t so busy right now that they couldn’t help you if you give the admissions office a call. My D received her roommate assignment and her bill, which is due August 1st. Other than that, not much is happening, although I’m sure kids are dealing with issues related to loans, declining the default tuition insurance, and other logistical matters. If you seriously want to go there (your Youngstown situation sounds pretty good), now is the time to get on the phone. Don’t wait for them - colleges just aren’t that efficient.
Whatever happens, you sound as if you’re in a really good place and will make the most of it. Congrats!
