I might be too young.

But I hate not having a plan.
I'm a freshman in Pre-IB.
I have a 3.1 GPA currently and I'm freaking out because things will only get harder.

Ideally, I want to go to BYU on the pre med track, followed by getting an MD at the University of Utah, then a residency in Psychiatry.

Is this even realistic with my grades?
I'm scared of the MCAT, and all the necessary Clinical Research hours and such. Not to mention the intense science classes.

But I'm seriously interested in Psychiatry, and Psychology, and Neuroscience, and Pharmacology.

I've considered Caribbean Medical School because I can't handle the US.
But the impossible residency afterwards.

And I'm just a freshman. But I need to get these things straight.

Any input? :D

Hey. Calm down, you’re a freshman after all, this is a good time to sit down and think about what you’re doing. I think you have a decent shot at BYU (lol don’t set your heart on the Caribbean yet, even if they do have better weather) IF you get on the right track now. Why is your gpa getting low? Are you slacking off, or is your course load genuinely too difficult for you? What about your ec’s, are they taking up too much time? You need to pinpoint the source of your problems to tackle them effectively.
IB is going to be tough and you have to be very sure-footed so that you don’t get burnt out junior/senior year for nothing. Also, if you are interested in psych/pharma, how do you know that these are really what you’ll be good at? Because this is the perfect time for you to switch plans if you want to. You just have to take a deep breath and see where you’re at, because you can still start on the right path if you get started now. then stop stressing and get off cc, get back to work! :)

Whoa, whoa…calm down. You shouldn’t be stressing this much until you are in IB and even then it’s a bit much. And is 3.1 your unweighted GPA? And you have 2ish more years to improve your grades, it’s not the end of the world. I would also suggest that you look at your plan, it’s so…inflexible. You are a freshman and have lots and lots of time to change your mind. Look at other options and other possible careers that interest you before putting yourself in a rigid bubble. With the way IB teaches, you will change your mind about how to think of things or do things since it’s from a world POV. And you should just worry about keeping your grades up and doing meaningful EC’s to get into the best college you can. If you still want to be a doctor by then, you can start worrying about the MCAT, etc.

Hey I’m also a Freshman in utah planning on going into the full IB Program at Hillcrest. What high school are you going to?

I’m not going to tell you to calm down at this point, since the others have done a great job at doing so, but I will try and help you. You are scared. It is okay. I too am a freshman, but I am dealing with it. At the end of the day, you simply have to take what you have and keep on going. A 3.1 Freshman GPA? That’s nothing, some colleges don’t even use Freshman grades and as you are going into an IB program, your weighted GPA should inflate nicely.

Just Take a Deep Breath.

Also, the Carribean thing is equal amounts of work, but you graduate faster. Also, I’m assuming you live in Utah, in which case simply email professors in your interested fields with your resume and why you would like to intern with them. This will give you experience doing what they do and will let you see if you want it and how to go about it [I’m assuming these professors can at least give some advice].

Good Luck!

Plot twist: I live in Georgia.
But Utah is my ideal living setting.
My unweighted is 3.1 due to some of my high B’s, yet my weighted is 3.5.

You guys are all extremely helpful!!
At this rate, I can get the IB diploma, but most likely with a 3.0>
:frowning:
But who knows.

UGA and Emory would be schools I’d contact in order to get in on Neuroscience. Maybe even try the CDC. That could be fun. Also, you are fine still. Remember, you have Junior and Sophmore year to correct your mistakes.

My best suggestion for you as a senior in high school to a freshie:

Go catch some zzz’s. Life can wait 3 more years.

@chewydog you are wisest among all. I totally agree…sleeeeeeeep

IB = DEATH.

Just kidding, I didn’t mean to scare you. But it is a fairly rigorious program. You have an advantage that I lack at the moment in that your pre-IB program is preparing you for the actual IB. Just think about what justacitygirl said: why are your grades lower than what you would like? If you identify and fix the problem now, you’ll be golden for the next three years of high school.

And, to sound like a broken record, you’re a freshman! Enjoy yourself! Enjoy your life while there is still some left of it!

Lol, thanks guys.
The problem seems to be that if I don’t try, I get C’s/B’s, but if I really apply myself I could manage majority of A’s.
Now to stay motivated for 3 years.
And look into freshman-GPA-excluding colleges… .-.
