I nearly failed a math class.

I had very bad depression in my first year of high school. Only some grades slipped, my Precalculus Honors grade was a D. I got a 78. I also failed Psychology completely from not doing work and skipping too many periods. My other classes were fine. I’m retaking Psychology next year and taking the AP exam.

But as for math, I don’t know if it’s worth retaking or not. I’m looking into schools in CA and the UK and I understand that Precalculus is a senior math class. Except for Calculus and above, but those are for STEM programs and I’m studying Political Science, International Relations or PPE.

It kind of disrupted my progress in math.
8th Grade:
Algebra I - 94 (there is no honors)
Geometry Honors - 100

First semester:
Algebra II Honors - 96

And then the 78.

I’m taking statistics next year and hopefully I’ll succeed. So given I’m still taking math (Statistics), should I go ahead and retake Precalculus?

Also, from my knowledge 80s are high marks in Canada and the UK right? I also have some knowledge that these schools don’t pay attention to freshman year.

I am sorry you experienced depression and hope you are getting treated. It is important for everyone who has experienced depression to understand that one episode increases the risk for subsequent ones. For prospective college students that means it is important to factor that risk into the decision making about what college to attend. Finding a college close to current supports or where you will find new supports readily is important.

In terms of your post, you have apparently only completed one year of high school. You have time to improve your grades. Focus on classes and activities you view as valuable and that you will care about. Picture yourself in 10 years. What can you do next year that will help you to become the kind of person you envision for yourself in 10 years?

In terms of 80s being high marks in Canada or England, that is irrelevant for you if you are getting grades in the US. No matter where you go to college, they will interpret your grades in light of the system you were in when you got the grades. If 80s are high grades someplace, that is because lower grades are given out more frequently in that system but it does not change how they interpret grades for students coming from other systems. In the US 80s are not top grades and admissions officers anywhere know that. But they are also not bad grades. They know that too.

It is too early to worry about how your grades will be viewed. Just focus on doing the best you can in all your activities and classes.

@lostaccount This is very useful advice, thank you.

And I am entering my junior year, trying to map out next year and senior year to meet the requirements for my course/program.

Anyone else?
