Well i never thought id do this for at least a few more months but a few days ago i just got back from visiting BC and it is definatly my number one pick right now as it has been for a while. Right now im wiggin out because competition is very fierce and im very worried. Im currently a junior attending a decent but not really wll known public school in the nyc burbs (westchester county). White Catholic in a very catholic town.

Rigor of courses is very intense. Im a year ahead in math, science, and foreing langauge so I took many of my regular freshmen classes in 8th grade and am currently taking some typical senior classes. Pretty much all honors. Took one ap last year euro (did horrible got a three when i expected a five, didnt get much sleep night before and wrote crap essays). This year im taking three aps, US, Enviromental (Im very dedicated to the study my ec’s back it up not a joke class for me), and English 11 (langauge composition). Psat worked out to like a 1450/1600 and im projecting at least a 2150 or so when i take the sat’s this weekend based on board practice tests. GPA is complete crap, our school doesnt weight but it works out to like a crappy 88 (no band/chorus/gym 100’s boosting it up, pretty much all core classes and a few difficult arts). GPA is really low due to rather bad family violence, dad seprated from mom and now lives across the country in california. I only see him once a month or so. Im gonna work this into my essay really well i think. School is very difficult, doesnt rank but i think after weighting im still top 10% at the very least (we do have a very abnormally high amount of insanely smart people in our class compared to others, my best friend has an iq of over 170 (aspergers).

EC’s

Will have 4 years varsity X-c with captain next year and will prolly make states next year (barely missed it this year)
Will have 4 years varsity track and am currently captain this year, will also prolly make states this year
10 years of competitive swimming during the summers.
Echo (community service club) will have 4 years.
My trump card: Founded very unique charity (10th grade) which uses capatalism for the good of cancer research. Not yet really recognized (were currently flying under the radar on purpose, legal stuff) but we will be soon i gaurentee.
100 hrs community service over past 4 years at local nature reserve.
Part time job on weekends at independent coffee shop.
Yeah not a lot of variety but all this i pour my life into. Prolly spend up to 24 hours a week on running alone (long meets!) during the height of the season. Have a lot more insignifigent stuff but i left it out.

Im a very good writer and i am hoping to write a really good unique essay (already have ideas cooked up).

Yeah i know a lot of blanks and incomplete stuff which can drastically change my chances but i just want to hear some opinions. Grades are on an upward curve after reaching a low point in 10th grade (family stuff) and im hoping to get all a’s this year.

Forgot to add that i trade options with my self earned money and had 40% returns last year which i think is pretty good. Also will be applying to carrol.

I'd say calm down a little. You have a very good chance at admission. Even with your slightly lower gpa (BC likely knows of your school and its grading practices) Also, can I send you some $ to invest for me at 40%. That's impressive in a down market.

"i think after weighting im still top 10% at the very least (we do have a very abnormally high amount of insanely smart people in our class compared to others, my best friend has an iq of over 170 (aspergers)."

this has been driving me insane. If you have a high amount of "insanely smart people" how are you top 10% with an 88? Either your school is VERY tough with grades or grading policy is completely different then ours. My school is a top 100 school in the nation and I have about a 93ish and I'm around 20-25% of my class.

And over 170 iq is ridiculous i think your friend was lieing to you. 170 IQ is like the 99.99% percentile. Over 130 IQ is considered "genius". And iqtest.com is not a real IQ test.

Like i said my friend has aspergers syndrome (look it up if you dont know it, einstein is thought to have it). Basically hes a very lazy person but a genious, got darn near perfect psats and will almost undoubtably get a perfect math section. He was tested as a kid by doctors (when he told me he says has 165-170), saw a lot physichitrist's when he was young because his parents were concerned about his social development and what not (his moms a physician the dad is probobly gonna make partner at goldman sachs this year). Will prolly end up making quant forumlas for goldmans hedge funds lol. My friend chose public school over horace mann (big private school in the city). Also you know what I was really wrong when i said my rank, we have a very small class but of that class like 30 or so are in the honors program and take at least 2 aps this year so im probobly after weighting top 20-25%, yeah big mistake i know lol. Also to mnwin the secret is options, you can easily go bust or quadruple you money if you make the right plays. Played etrade when it crashed to 2 and exercised my call at 4 something so thats where most of my profits came from. You can still make money in a down market shorting but you gotta be careful. I'll let you know if me and my friend start a hedge fund lol.

Ok dude fine I really dont want to argue with you over this, your entitled to think whatever you want. I just want you to know i dont have any incentive to lie so why on earth would i come purposly to this forum makinging some claim like this. This is supposed to be a chance me thread lol not about my friends iq. Also to quote the article "Some people with Aspergers Syndrome have high IQ scores". Does it honestly matter though. Regardless pretty much our whole school holds to the fact he's a genious. I've been best friends with him since grade school so i know him pretty well. Now back to the topic of the post do you think its better to apply ea or rd. i hear ea is much more competitive and i dont really want to disadvantage myself even if bc is my first choice. What do you think?

Dear miktau : Some comments on your profile. First, your Westchester location, private or otherwise, is neither an advantage or disadvantage as New York is a major drawing area for the Boston area schools. (Even Yale in Connecticut draws 20% of the application pool from the New York area.)

Your curriculum is standard for a student targeted at a strong (five or more) AP course load in the senior year of high school. Based on taking Euro AP "last year", that places you on track as a junior to have about eight to ten AP courses by the time you finish school. You do not have a hard science in your junior year which some schools do provide and allow their students to wind up with two (or more) APs in science. Be sure to have a science and Calculus (BC preferred over AB).

A PSAT at 1450/1600 implies that you had a 145 two-part score, but I do not understand your "forecast" for a 2150 on the SAT three-way : what was your three-way PSAT score?

Dealing with just numbers, your GPA would likely not be in the top 10% of most schools - so that will be a major hurdle.

Be sure to cover what Echo has done in the community - and how you have had an impact in that club. Sports (track/swimming) show involvement on that front. Any honor societies or additional clubs to offer? Without the honor societies, your 88 GPA will be underscored as not among the top students. Any music/arts or other awards (academic or otherwise) to raise?

Lastly, your personal situation is a wild card and would likely be considered in scope as a swing factor more than anything else - although it does back up your GPA situation. What was the change in your GPA after these significant events? Hardships are always difficult to calibrate into an acceptance or rejection.

My recommendation is to use the next three marking periods (two as a junior and first as a senior) to bolster your GPA and offer a before and after story. In parallel, I would think about about honor societies or school activities that would help my case as a campus leader. Right now, your profile is a stretch in these areas although your standardized test scores fit. Good luck and keep us posted!
