I need advice on my Financial Aid appeal letter

My financial aid was cancelled. My GPA is a 1.90 but I just got an email from my professor in one of my classes saying grades were messed up and they are increasing the students grades, which would bring me at a 2.1 gpa, getting me off of academic probation and getting financial aid but I am still going through the appeal process. Any advice?

Dear Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Committee:

I am writing to appeal the cancelation of my financial aid for the school term Fall 2012 to Spring 2013. I was shocked when I found out my financial aid was cancelled but found out it was due to my low cumulative GPA. As of right now, my overall GPA is 1.90, which has placed me on Academic Probation for the college of LAS.

I admit, that my first year of college was a difficult time for me due to circumstances I had no control over. On August 21st, 2011, I found out a friend of mine who lived near me was murdered and I didn’t deal with my grief properly. On top of that, on December 2nd, 2011 a fellow student who at the time I thought was my friend sexually assaulted me. From January to the end of February/early March of 2012, I went through the process of pressing charges against the offender, preparing myself mentally for having to see him again and had a Student Judicial Hearing where I retold what had happened to me. Even after the Student Judicial Hearing, I still had the assault on my mind and everything that happened and didn’t face the situation like I should have.

The death of my friend and the aftermath of my sexual assault was devastating but will not continue to hinder on my academic performance. I have come to terms with both situations and understand that there is nothing I can do to change what has happened to me. I will start going to therapy sessions if I need professional help instead of shutting down like I have done in the past.

I know my weak points in subjects; I have always struggled in math and science courses. I failed Anthropology 102 in the Fall Semester of 2011 and have signed up to re-take the course and plan to pass the class with at least a B grade. Along with the Anthropology course, I plan to have high marks in the rest of my courses for the rest of my academic career. Instead of letting my personal problems get in the way of my academic progress, I will go to my professor’s office hours, seek tutoring in subjects that I struggle in, manage my time more wisely, stay in contact with my professors, stay in contact with my academic advisor, seek professional help when I need it and keep myself informed about S.A.P. guidelines. On top of that, I will no longer withdraw from any courses I am taking while in college. I know I am capable of receiving high grades in courses and getting off of Academic Probation and Financial Probation if I am placed on Financial Probation.

I love interset college name here and it would mean a lot to me to be placed on Financial Aid Probation if my appeal is accepted. It is the only way I can afford to go to University. Though I have a low GPA, I am not a poor student and I take my education very seriously. Throughout my first year I realized Psychology wasn’t the major for me and switched to Undeclared and plan to get a degree in either Political Science or Criminal Justice. I hope you will give me a second chance. Thank you for taking time out of your day and considering my appeal.

Sincerely,

my name

Shorten the heck out of the letter and get to the point. Your prof in XXXX class made an error and your GPA is now really 2.1

Agree with mom2. If 2.1 gpa will restore your fin aid everything else is beside the point.
What is your goal? It seems to be getting fin aid restored and something else. Deal with each separately.

First, contact the school to make sure the 2.1 puts you back on track for aid. Financial aid probation and academic probation are two different things, and aid probation has been tightened up due to recent federal regulations. If you really will be okay GPA-wise for aid, you can just say that your grade was changed & provide the transcript with the changed grade as proof. If the GPA is still too low for aid, state the two issues, provide documentation (copy of friend’s death notice or newspaper article about the murder, documentation of proceedings against the offender). Be concise … say what happened and provide proof. Then focus on what you plan to do differently (the info you wrote is fine for that). If approved, you will most likely be given an academic plan that you will be expected to stick with.

Thank you everyone who has replied to my thread. My Fin Aid advisor said it was because my SAP percentage is at a 60%. Has anyone ever dealt with the financial aid appeal process before? I’m not getting my hopes but I want to know if it looks grim.
