I need Help!! Parents help me please!!

Okay here is the situation,
I just got accepted to Cornell University's CALS as a biological science major. I have completed all my requirement except Biology II with lab. Now in order for me to complete Biology II with lab, I would have to take it over the summer.

I could find no community college in Maryland that offer Biology II with lab. The only institute that I can find Biology II with lab is Morgan State University.

Now the problem is, it would cost at least ~$1,200. I and my parents are able to pay for it, however, it will be a big struggle for us.

Now, the other situation is that we now have no car, we have bad credit, no one in our family is willing to help us out, and my older brother and sister are being jerks and are not helping us out.

So, if we have two choices, try and get the car fix; if we do that, then I will not be able to pay for my summer course. We can pay for our summer course at Morgan State University; if we do that, then we would have no car and therefore it would be very difficult to commute there. So either way I will lose this financial battle. So the only thing I can think of is getting a loan for my summer course. My parents tried their best and do not want me to get a loan, but I don't see any other way.

So I was wondering, if Cornell is willing to give me a subsidize or unsubsidized loan for my summer course.

If I do get a loan from Cornell for my summer course, will my financial aid for the 09-010 year adjust or change? If so, is there a bank I can go to to get a student loan that will not charge me interest until I graduate from Cornell?

Please I really need help. My family is struggling workers everyday and I hate to see them like this. It not only affects them, but it also affects me and my little brother. My older brother and sister are being jerks and standing there watching us fall until we have no place to go.

Edit: Oh By the way, I commute to my current college, I do not live on-campus. I also do not know my financial package yet. But I expect it close to be a full ride because my EFC is 0 and my parents makes 17k/ year. :'(... I will not be able to get my financial package from Cornell until mid-may.

I’d call Cornell Fin Aid dept and run the whole thing by them and get their advice. It’s always best to go to the source and people can be very helpful. Good luck!

Can any parent shed some light on subsidized students loan? OP mostly likely won’t have any loans in his FA package. I don’t think taking out a few thousand $ loan to be paid back after graduation is really end of the world. I am just not sure how OP would go about getting a subsidized loan - would the parents bad credit be a factor?

I suggested for OP to post here to get better response from parents.

Okay, I have done some research and I think I want to get a Federal Perkins Loan. Cornell does offer it but I am scare that my aid may adjust for the fall and spring semester.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

After thinking about this for a moment-mark your post with the same title URGENT in the Financial Aid section. There are two parents who are FA counselors at colleges who are CC senior members and I have noticed that they seem to check and respond to questions on that board regularly. Hopefully, a cross-post will speed-up an answer.

Also, I would think Cornell’s FA office or the CALS office might have some idea about emergency funding for this type of situation. GOOD LUCK!

talk to the finaid department at the college where you will take the summer course

Have you contacted Montgomery College?

They offer Biology II with lab in the summer session. Because you are apparently a Maryland resident but not a resident of Montgomery County, the tuition would be comparable to that at Morgan State.

But just possibly, you might be able to successfully argue that you should be allowed to pay the much lower tuition for in-county residents because your own county’s community college does not offer the course. It’s worth a try.

Of course, it would be an appalling commute for you. But if you could pay the in-county tuition, which is only about $540 for a 4-credit course, you might have enough money to get the car fixed AND take the course, too.

I live in baltimore city and the Montgomery College is near DC which is ~45-50 min. drive from my house. The mechanic suggest that if we get the car fix, we should not drive it over a long distance. I’m afraid that we will have the same problem if we do drive it over that long distance.

or is there mass transit available?

Oh and congrats on the Cornell acceptance

To be honest I do not think what you are wanting to do, as far as loans, is possible. For a start off you have to be enrolled at least half time to be eligible for any Federal loans. My daughter is doing summer classes and had to be enrolled for a minimum of 6 hours to even be considered for summer financial aid, and this is at a school she is enrolled in full time. I believe it is a federal requirement. Also I believe you usually have to be enrolled as a degree candidate at a school to be eligible for federal aid. As a guest student you would not be eligible.

If you were able to do this it is unlikely you would get the Perkins loan. It is a *very *limited funding loan and the schools have only $xxx to award for a year. Once that is awarded they have no more. The likelihood of a school having any Perkins funds available for summer school is very remote.

Additionally I am not sure Cornell can help you out here. For a start off you are not enrolled there till the fall so would not be eligible for federal aid through them. Also I don’t think one school can award you federal money to go to another school unless there is some sort of consortium agreement between the two schools.

I would second the suggestion of posting this in the financial aid section. Hopefully Kelsmom or Nikkil, both financial aid officers in the real world, will be able to let you know what is or is not possible.

Have you considered getting a job and paying for this through summer earnings? Even with a minimum wage fast food job you could earn enough in a couple of months to pay for this.

I would also talk to Cornell and see if you can get the requirement waived stating your financial situation - see if you can make it up somehow at Cornell.

@ Theorymom, the transit service is very difficult. I mean I know I can take the marc train to Silver spring, but form there I am totally lost because I think i may have to take like 3 buses to get there. I am willing to do that and I am investigating more ways on trying to figure out how to get to that campus. And thanks for the congrats!!

@swimcats, I been trying my best to look for a summer job, but it is very difficult due to the recession I believe. I have applied to at least 10 different jobs over this month and another 10 last months. So far I had no calls. I also applied for paid research internship jobs, but I will not be able to known if I got accepted until later on this month.

@#theorymom, I think that would be the very last resort if that comes to it. If I get deny for a student loan or something, I will have to contact them and hope they will waive my situation.

Ditto post 2. Check with the college, see what they require and what they recommend.

Contacting Cornell is the very first thing you should do. Either call or email and ask them what they recommend you do.

agree with pugmadkate
