I literally have no money right now. I'll be moving to another city in a few weeks so I can't get a job right now. I'm starting school in the fall in TX (I live in the Midwest).

The problem is I need money to relocate with. I will try to save as much as possible before hand but I'm wondering if there is some type of assistance for students in my predicament. What can I do???

The way I have always seen it work, you cannot get any of the aid money you may have qualified for until a couple of weeks before the term starts, in most all cases I have seen. Even then, you will only have half the money sent to the college and the school will take its costs before releasing funds to you. You have to understand that the college is a business unto itself and it is not a surrogate parent or sponsor. Are you an independent student?

It seems to be one of those things that varies hugely from school to school. The 2 schools we have experience with do not release FA refunds until well *after *school starts. My daughter’s school it is after the 2 week add/drop period, so it is usually the 3rd week of school. My son’s school was really slow and it took about 6 weeks if they had their act together, one semester it was even longer than that.

But I have never heard of any sort of special assistance for a student to move.

Is it absolutely necessary that you move to a new city now…example of necessary - your parents are moving and sold the house and you have no where to live. What is the cause of the predicament right now? If you don’t have to move either on your own or with your parents I agree with the poster who said get a job now so you have some cash when you leave for college. But believe me…you will need CASH before you start college even if you mashed together full funding…work/study jobs don’t pay out until you find the job. You will need transportation costs to get to the campus and you will need cash for books, etc. so if you are cash strapped now, you need to part yourself in the least expensive location --which generally is with your parent(s) and start saving some money.

I’m also not aware of “special assistance” to move to college. Generally kids that can’t afford to go to a far away college stick close to home.
