Ok. First of all, let me just say that I'm aware of how lame this is going to sound. I am a rising sophomore and I am currently in summer school. I really didn't make any friends last year and I was hoping that would change now but so far it's the same old situation. I don't think I'm overly socially awkward or annoying (but who does?)...I had friends in high school and I've decided I'm good at being a friend but not good at making them and I'm not sure why. I don't know what I'm expecting from this but I'm just tired of being bored all the time in my room. :(

Try meeting people on your hall. Don't sit in your room all the time, go out and meet people.

Summer school is also a place where there are not many students. If you live in a dorm, leave your door open. If people have their doors open go in and say hi and introduce yourself. In class just say something like "Hard/easy class huh?" or "the professor is nice/awful" etc, and introduce yourself that way. And keep talking to them and ask for their number/hang out after class after a few days.

i see that you go to UNC; we can totally hang out next year :)

also i met people mostly in my classes and on my hall, so definitely leave your door open and go next door to introduce yourself!

also make plans with people in your classes to study at lunch or dinner @ lenoir. you probably won't do much studying, but you'll get to know them that way.

hm. switch the order of those two posts.

OKAY they should go like this (jesus christ, i dunno what the deal is):

6

4

5

and this one should be #7. there.

Are you in any clubs or sports? It's easier to make friends if you have a common interest/something to talk about. Or sign up for some volunteer activities. And remember, smile. :)

leah, can i hang out with you?

haha i think proximity (or lack thereof) would prevent that..

My brother works for IBM at their headquarters there. I can always visit.
haha joking. that would be way too creepy and weird

hahah you're probably actually 45. or a really heavy breather. or both. preying on young women.

actually my boyfriend uses these chat room things called mIRC and he's been talking to the same people for like 6-7 years and he's actually met some of them in person..internet friendship is kind of hard for me to comprehend, but whatever.

Actually the name of the chat system is just IRC (internet relay chat), and mIRC is the windows client most people use to connect to it. It stopped being really popular, like, almost a decade ago. There was supposed to be some way to use it for filesharing, but I never got that figured out.

A decade ago?? I still use IRC, but I mostly use the chatzilla plugin for firefox instead of mIRC (which isn't legally free). I used to use it for filesharing back in the day, but torrents are a lot faster now.

People still use it, but it stopped being the predominant force in real-time online communication when AIM started to become popular.

he downloads stuff with torrents but still talks to his.."friends" in the little black chat room.
as you can see, my understand is kind of..minimal.

Perhaps internet friendships/chat rooms should be in another thread?

yes leah, im a 50 year old man pretending to be a college student just for this reason.

i knew it ;)
