I need some schools for a NORMAL kid

Hello everyone.

On CC, all I ever hear about is the Harvard's, Princeton's, and Yale's. Well Im just not to that caliber, so I need some help.

I need some schools that I can actually get into. All of the schools I'm looking at are ridiculously hard to get into. Ill tell you guys what I want, and maybe you can give me some schools.

I want
* a big sports scene
* traditional campus
* I want the school do have a prominent, prestigious name
* cool weather
* size isn't a factor
* a very residential school.... most of the kids live on campus and don't go home on the weekends

Ill just give you a few of my stats so you know where to look

28 ACT
3.99 weighted GPA... like 3.75 unweighted
varsity athlete

thanks

Will you play the sport (be recruitable) in college?

In most of the country, your local state university has more name recognition, alumni following, and networking possibilities than virtually any of the privates, including the Ivies (and much bigger sports scenes). Many of them have honors colleges as well.

Some schools to look into with name recognition:

University of Michigan Ann Arbor
UCLA/CAL/USC
Carnegie Mellon
Northwestern-though a reach

This is a question that would be helped if you told us where you lived (state, region).

Yeah, I'm wondering if you're trying to play your sport as well...

Knowing nothing though I'd suggest Penn State for sure.

Syracuse, Colgate, UVM

You won't get into UCLA or Cal if you're out of state. You have a shot at UW-Madison.

Penn State/UVirginia/UNorth Carolina/UT Austin are great sports schools with nice campuses

Answered this post on another thread. I did not realize that you preferred cool weather. I agree with UVM, UW-M, Syracuse, Penn State. Also perhaps Villanova, Rutgers, UDel, Ohio State and U Mich. could work for you.

You clearly haven't been here too long! We remember the "WOW kids" stories, but there are plenty who have never even been to Lake Woebegone, too.

I'm curious what kind of financial aid/need you're looking for. Is there a cost issue? Will you need scholarships? Will you qualify for aid? You want "name" - do you care if it's private or public? City or rural?

GoBlueGoBlue, I'm assuming you're in Michigan, if not, sorry. With your stats you are in great shape for Michigan State, your ACTs are OK but not great for Uof M but combined with your GPA and if you're in-state you've got a very good shot. After that any of the Midwest Big 10 schools you could look at if cost is not a factor. A friend of mine has a daughter who wanted very similar things to your request and had very similar stats. She really did apply to all the Big 10 schools and ended up picking Indiana.

I think MOST college campuses have active Chapters of NORML.

Normal- would that be "average"? with an Iq of 100 and an SAT of 1000?

Michigan State - if you're out of state, with that ACT you should be able to get into the Honors College and pick up $8,000/year in merit aid.

senatorBlutarsky, Do you know what is required to renew the 8000 at Mich State (is it a gpa of 3.0)? Thanks.

northeastmom -- you need to be at 3.2 or above to hang onto the $8k a year.

Thanks, SenatorB.

U Maryland, U delaware, syracuse

I was thinking Syracuse, too, except for the "cool" weather part....I wouldn't exactly call Syracuse's weather "cool."
