I Need Transfer Advice!

I’m a second semester Freshman at MC and I am applying for UMD Fall 2019 priority transfer. I’ve completed 18 credits so far and have 14 in progress. I’ve completed the English requirement but not the Math requirement (because it is in progress/I’m taking it this semester) my Accuplacer scores did place me in college level math. Currently, I have a 3.4 GPA, extremely strong reccs, essays, resume, extracurriculars/internships, etc. Are exceptions made for people who haven’t completed the math requirement? Are people usually rejected or can you send your midterm grades? Thanks in advance.

There is a webpage that explains what you need to do.

Because you don’t have enough credits, you need to send in your high school grades and tests. It’s OK to have a required course in progress. They will rely heavily on your high school info.

But, why are you transferring now and not next year? It seems like it would be a lot easier and more economical to wait a year.

@explorer16 Thanks for the link! I did send over my HS transcript and SAT scores, although I don’t think either are going to do me any favors. The reason why it’s crucial that I transfer now rather than later is because when my AP credits are factored in, I’m already at 47 total credits. I’m set to get my AA after this semester is finished. I’ve done what normally takes 2 years, in 1 year and as a result I won’t have anything to take for an additional semester, unless I start to work towards a different AA degree. Since I am also pursuing Pre-Med, I can’t take any higher level sciences at MC without it going against me later (this was confirmed by multiple Pre-Med advisors). Staying an additional semester would hinder my college career overall, especially because I am on track to graduate a year early anyways. The main reason I was asking the question was because I applied as a Senior last year and was rejected, and was then rejected a second time when I filed an appeals. I just want to be able to mentally prepare myself for a possible third rejection, as awful as that sounds.

With an AA they consider things differently and MC is an MTAP school so you should be good if your GPA is high enough.

I’d talk to your advisor to make sure you are well lined up and hit the deadline for the MTAP.

@explorer16 MTAP is where things get tricky again, they don’t factor in AP credits towards your 30 that you need to qualify for MTAP. UMD wants 30 college credits completed before you apply, but as it looks right now, I will have 60+ by the end of my second semester, with 32 being actual credit I got at MC. As I apply, I only have 18 credits earned from MC (but 22 via AP that won’t be factored in). It’s unfortunate because I doubt they’ll consider what’s in progress.

I should also clarify that I am enrolled in MTAP and have been for the minimum one semester.

I’m not really seeing the problem but you are leaving out so much information that only later gets stated that it’s hard to know really what’s going on. If you’re earning an AA, you don’t need 30 credits. So, I’m guessing that you are in an AA program but not earning one. In which case, I’d say you should earn the AA. Your cc advisor and the UMD transfer office can help you with your specific situation.

From the page linked above:

Students must participate in MTAP for a minimum of one semester before transferring to UMD. To complete the program requirements and successfully transfer to Maryland, students should work closely with their community college counselor to meet the following minimum criteria:

Complete 30 college credit hours or earn an associate’s degree from an MTAP partner community college
Complete Fundamental Studies Academic English and Mathematics*
Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or a B average from all previous institutions attended
Adherence to all admission policies in addition to the academic stipulations already listed
Submit a completed UMD transfer application by the priority deadline following the semester in which you’ll complete all MTAP requirements

*AP/IB credits can be used to satisfy the Fundamental English & Math courses required for MTAP, however, they will not count towards the overall 30 college credit hours required to complete MTAP or apply for transfer admissions to the University of Maryland. Original AP/IB test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Additionally, credits earned at another two- or four-year institution can be used to meet the MTAP requirements, as long as the last 15 credits are completed at one of the seven participating community colleges.

When my daughter was transferring, she asked questions of UMD Pre-transfer advising at Pretransferadvising@umd.edu. However, according to their website https://www.pretransferadvising.umd.edu/prospective/general.php, MC has an on-site Pre-transfer advisor who would be better equipped to answer your questions.

@reads2222 Thanks for your help, I did speak with my Pre-Transfer advisor and his answer was wishy washy at best. In regards to the math class not being completed but being in progress at the time of applying. He basically told me to just hope for the best, which is kind of disheartening.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to leave an update in case anyone runs into a similar issue down the road. I talked with admissions representatives from UMD and they said that as long as you apply priority that not having the math class completed isn’t considered as heavily. Also that having it in progress would not lead to you having your decision held but that they might request midterm or final grades from that class. If you apply after priority, it’s a different story, you are more likely to be rejected as a result of not having that class completed.
