I had my teacher recs all lined up and all I was waiting for was my English teacher from last year to mail my forms. Then the other day my current English teacher calls me to tell me that the teacher's husband had a heart attack and now my current teacher (the one who called) will be doing my rec instead. This teacher taught me my freshmen year and this year, but she doesn't really know me and we just don't get along that well. She gave me the recommendation she wrote because I was still finalizing my list of schools, so i was just going to mail them out for her. The point of my story is that the rec. she wrote was awful! She didn't even write one. on the evaluation section where everyone puts 'see attached' and adds on the actual rec., all she did was write six sentences that say i'm a smart girl who's a good reader and will succeed. plus the ratings were less than appealing (b/c she hardly knows me and the stuff i've done/been through like the teacher who was supposed to do the rec). What should I do? This is so unfair! Please help me...

I personally think you should ask the teacher whose husband had heart attack again because I think she SHOULD have done your rec. When did you give it to her? I just don't think a heart attack is a good excuse for not writing a rec.

yea i mean if you gave it to her a while back, then she should have already sent it in. i mean i gave my teachers rec stuff in late september and it was all out a month later, so it really shouldnt be a problem

I agree with the above posters. You should explain to the teacher you wanted to do it that your current English teacher doesn't know you as well, and you'd really like for her to write it instead. I don't think she'd be too busy, I mean, she's probably just waiting in the hospital for a majority of the day.

I feel compelled to reply to the op after seeing all the responses here. Please be grateful that your teacher took the time to find you another teacher to write the recommendations even at this time of crisis. If I were you, I would contact immediately all the colleges today to explain to them that your recommender's husband just suffered a heart attack & that additional time is needed to find another teacher who knows you well. I wish you the best of luck!

Yeah that's a good idea too, I guess we all have a different idea of what a teacher's responsibility should be, and I really think you should make your own decision based on your idea, but DO contact Rice and explain the situation and I'm sure they'll listen. Just don't send them your current teacher's rec.

Do NOT contact the teacher whose husband had a heart attack!!!! She has already discharged her responsibilities to you by asking another teacher to write your rec. If she thought she had the mental energy or time to do it, she would not have asked someone else to take over for her. Please allow her the time to heal and deal with the trauma of her husband's condition.
As for the rec - go with #7's idea.

i would just ry to find another teacher and explain the situation to all the colleges you are applying to. i mean you don't want to stress out your original teacher even more considering what she's going through. good luck! hope it all works out for the best!
