So, I got my acceptance letter from UMich last week, but I decided I wont attend the school because I want to take a gap year and apply elsewhere.

I dont know how to turn the school down, but I want to get over this dilemma quick. Am I supposed to send an email to them saying that I wont attend this fall? Should I send the message through the postal mail?

I want to send a letter that doesnt sound too harsh, but yet will satisfy my motives, but am totally stumped on how to start it off. Can anyone give me some ideas? Personal experiences will be appreciated as well.

btw, Good luck and congrats to all CC seniors.

UMich isnt my type of school. I applied just because my parents forced me to apply to a college.

My top choice schools so far are Penn, Pton, UWisconsin, NYU, UCB, Rice, UT Austin and Oxford in the UK. Dont get me wrong, UMich is an AMAZING school, but I dont think its a match school for me.

I was actually expecting a rejection from UMich given that I am OOS and I applied so late, and thus my acceptance was a shocker to me.

Which of the others were you accepted to?

My parents forced me to apply to a college, so I chose UMich. I did not apply anywhere else, and i will me applying to my choice schools this year.

You don't need to send a letter, just don't send the deposit, and they'll take the hint. It's what I did when I was accepted to my 2nd 3rd and 4th choices.

The most polite thing to do is to send a note by mail. That way the college knows that they are free to accept another student in your place. Colleges also like having a piece of paper with the information on it (since a vindictive friend could make a phone call or the person answering phones could get confused).

All you need to do is inform them that you will not be attending because of yada yada yada. It doesn't hurt to throw in a nice compliment about the school, either, or thank them for accepting you. Short and easy.
