I need your Say!! Stanford, Columbia!!!!!!!

I am applying to UCLA, UCB, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia. Please tell me what you think my chances are:

My average unweighted GPA is 3.72. My average weighted is about 4.2-4.3. I am in the top 5% or 6% of my class, like 20 something in my class. My school in one of the top public schools in the nation.
-9th grade I got a 3.57 first semester, and a 3.75 second semester. I took 2 honors classes freshmen year.
-10th grade, I had three honors classes (There weren't any AP classes I could take). First semester, I recieved a 3.33, and second semester I got a 4.0 unweighted (from 2 A's/ 4 B's to all A's!).
-I had 4 AP classes my junior year, with scores on 5 on US, 5 on Psych, 3 on Eng Lang, and 2 on Chem. First semester I got 3.67, and second semester I got 3.83.
-Right now, I have 5 AP classes, and plan to get a 3.83 or higher on my first semester report card.
-I have progressed in my classes. For example, I have not stopped taking spanish like most people in my class. I have been in spanish since 9th grade.

I got a 770 on my SAT II USH, and I'm predicting a 780 on my IIC test. I'm also taking SAT II lit, and I'm hoping for a 740 at least. My SAT I score on the old SAT was 1440, and on the new one it was 2110. I'm taking the test again in Dec. I want to raise my new SAT I score above an 2200.

School activites
-I have been in my schools Model United Nations club since 9th grade, and I have gotten a number of gavels.
-I have been on my high schools swim team since 9th grade, and I have received a number awards from my swim coach such as Coach's Award and most improved Award.
-I have also been involved in National Honor Society since 11th grade (only can join in 11th and 12 grade). I was elected representative of NHS.
-I have also been involved in my schools Builder's Society Club. This club is also another community service organization club. You know, like beach clean-up.
-This year, I am also a charter member of Junior Statesmen of America (I dont know if I should put this on my college application).

Outside school:
-I have volunteered since elementary school at Tzu-Chi Relief Organization of Cerritos. I have gained over 700 hours for this club. I used to be elected vice president of the Tzu-Chi Youth Club. Now, sicne the president left, I am co-presidents of this club with another girl.
-I have volunteered at the Children's Hospital of Orange County since 10th grade (minimum age was 16). I volunteer in the reading room by reading to children and taking care of them.
-I volunteer at Twin-Palms Convalescent Home. Every month since 2001, I have hosted an entertainment program to entertain the senior.
-Recently, I was one of the few people who was accepted as an intern for the Office of Congresswoman Linda Sanchez. I help with office work, and I attend meeting with Linda.
-I am planning to volunteer for Alliance for a Better California, since they have asked students at our school for help.

-I dont have a lot of activites because I dedicate myself to the few activites I do participate in.

I recently recieved the Eligibility of the Local Context letter from the UC's saying I qualified to apply as part of that, and it says I am in the top 4% of my class (I think my school's ranking system is not accurate, some people with no AP or honor classes have higher ranks than me).

I am planning to get excellent letter of recs from my AP Psych and MUN teacher.

My major is going to be something in the humanities. Maybe political science, communications, or business (So my AP chem score and grade wont affect me that much; I'm not focusing on science or math).

Also, I live in Southern California. Last year, 30 people from my school got into UCLA/USC, and about 20 got into UCB. I also knwo that 60% of ELC applicants got in Berkely, while 50% got into UCLA.

Please tell me what you think my chances are for UCLA, UCB, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia. Please take everything into consideration, even with the predicted 2200 on SATs.

Good luck; alot of people on this forum this i have a crappy chance of getting into STanford...so I think Stanford might be a reach for you too.

I think you'll get into USC thought ;)

I knwo for Stanford tha the essay is one of the biggest part of the application. Hw bout my chances at the other schools I listed?

I don't understand the UC's so I can't guess on them. Sorry!

For the remaining schools, my main concern is what I don't see - which is a safety or two. Cornell is probably a match - but not a rock-solid sure admit. You are certainly a valid candidate for Brown, Stanford and Columbia - but they get a lot of applications from other valid candidates, and their rejection rates run between 85-90%.

Some suggestions.

If you are not assured of a place with either UCLA or UCB, add another of your state instutions as a likely admit - or find a uni that admits at least 40% of its applicants and you are in the top quartile for all stats.

IMO, you should cancel that 2 on your AP Chem at collegeboard. Its not going to help you at the schools you are looking at.

You sound like a great person, and will be an asset to any school you attend. Just make sure you have a safe foundation for your list!

Im also applying to UCSD and UCI

please reply. I want more input.

bad chance at stanford.

That 2 on AP Chem isn’t going to look so hot.

Well our school has a low chem pass rate since our teacher was kind of new. We only had a 40% pass rate, so it won't really affect me since colleges will know it was main, and our teacher's fault. Our Calc AB teacher has a pass rate of like 98% with an average of 4.38. Plus im ot majoring in science, and y consouler told me it my major shoulcn't conflict with the AP score. AP scores can't hurt you, only help you depending on your major.

I just recieved a mail from UCI yesterday saying that they will admit me if I apply, but I don't want to go to UCI. Too close to home.

aszx5527:

UCB/UCLA: Match
UCSD: Safe Match
UCI: Safety

"We only had a 40% pass rate, so it won't really affect me since colleges will know it was main, and our teacher's fault."

I wouldn't assume this. Anyway, with the schools you are looking at, you should have been in the 40%.

Are you kidding? Colleges will know it was a bad teacher?

Well, it was kind of akward. Some people with A's in the class got 2's on the test. However, I knew people who had C's and D's in the AP Chem class that passed with a 3.

sucks you had a bad ap chem teacher

7 of our 74 kids got 5's (including me) and almost 80% got 3's.

UCB/UCLA: Match/slight reach
UCSD: Safe Match
UCI: Safety

The rest of the schools are far reaches

Do AP scores really hurt me? I know I got a 2 on the AP chem test, but I got two fives and and three on AP Eng (Due to Bladder Problems, if you know what I mean.) Every one of my consulers tell me that AP scores can't hurt you, only benefit you.

2 on AP Chem is bound to hurt you...the adcoms will think that you weren't ready for the test but took it anyway...

UCLA, UCB, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia. Please tell me what you think my chances are

Stanford: MAJOR MAJOR REACH, especially since ur from California

Columbia/Brown: High Reach

Cornell: Reach

UCs, ur in.

The 2 on the Chem AP will hurt you, but not by that much. It just shows that your AP Chem class you took wasn't really legit or too easy. But it can't hurt you too badly.
For Ivy leagues, your main problem is your GPA and SAT

Either don't report the 2 or cancel the score entirely. Whether a 2 will hurt you or not depends on the schools to which you are applying. You're applying to top schools. Why include a negative on your application?
