Since there is a "I rejected UC Berkeley, for UCLA" group on Facebook, I figured it was only fair to do the same, and show off our UC Berkeley pride. Although Berkeley's reputation speaks for itself, it's fun being involved, and supportive of the University we are planning on or currently attending!

I understand there are not many students as fortunate to be able to choose between these wonderful Universities, however, if you are one of those lucky individuals accepted to both, and chose UC Berkeley over UCLA, PLEASE JOIN and CONGRATULATIONS!!

Most people would choose Berkeley over UCLA just because it’s mf’n Berkeley. It’s almost expected that people would choose Berkeley if they had the choice. People will nearly always pick the higher ranked, more prestigious school. It wouldn’t be noteworthy if someone picked Harvard over Yale, it’s almost given that they would make that decision, but it would be a little interesting if they turned down Harvard in favor of Yale. That’s why it’s noteworthy that a lot of us chose UCLA over Cal, since it’s not the expected decision. Anyway, have fun with your hippies while I bask in the sun and warmth.

I honestly think that the UCLA over Berkeley group was created out of insecurity so that people who went to UCLA can still let people know they got into Berkeley. They’re scared people might think because they chose UCLA that they didn’t get into Berkeley. There really isn’t another reason to put “I chose UCLA over Berkeley” when they could just call the group “We got into UCLA”. I don’t think they are trying to offend people who chose Cal.

How can someone feel insecure about choosing UCLA over Berkeley? If they’re so insecure about it, why didn’t they just choose to go to Berkeley? I tell people I was accepted to Berkeley because too many people get upset over being denied admission to Berkeley, so I just let them know that UCLA is a first choice school as well.

Most people who choose UCLA over Berkeley do so because UCLA has the So Cal environment that they want. UC Berkeley is more prestigious however, and that is testified by the fact that more people who get accepted to both pick Berkeley over UCLA. So when people pick UCLA over Berkeley for the environment, they know they’re foregoing a bigger brand name and the insecure ones will have to reassure themselves by pointing out that they too got into Berkeley.

I still don’t think that reflects insecurity. If anything, it takes a secure person to pass on prestige and status in favor of something as frivoulous as environment. I think the whole “I chose UCLA over Berkeley” thing stems from the whining these forums have seen from people lamenting their rejection from Berkeley, “forcing” them to go to UCLA.

Generally, yes, that’s the perception. Berkeley is higher ranked in almost every category. So for most people, Berkeley is the first choice, UCLA is the second choice… EXCEPT for people secure enough to forgo a little status and prestige and pick UCLA as their first choice.
I don’t think the people who announced that they chose UCLA over Berkeley were doing it because of their insecurities. I think they were doing it to show that some people actually CHOSE to go to UCLA at a time when a lot of people were crying about their Berkeley rejections.

…and I have no idea how to type that small…

I got into both, but I am from Socal and this is what makes the decision tough. I like CAL, but I think its too far away from home and the environment is sooooo different. Also UCLA I believe is a better option for me because I think LA students could create a better network in SOCAL.

For me, I got into Both…and I chose UCLA over Cal…Even though Cal is more prestigious(In my opinion, Cal is an IVY,it’s even better than many of the IVY’s in term of the majors rankings) , I have never been there…probably won’t have the time to go visit anytime during this year . For me, choosing UCLA is more secure because I just Love the campus and feel very very proud to be an UCLA student. However, I will still work hard and try to go Cal for Grad school.

P.S There is no point to argue whether Cal or UCLA is better, they are both prestigious schools…Being admitted to even one of these two schools is an honor.
