I said no to Harvard!

General comment to CC posters - Merk likes to create inflamatory posts and lives to bash Harvard. Our responding is just providing him/her enjoyment. Out of Merk’s extensive 39 posts, 24 bash Harvard. I suspect that was the main purpose for this individual to set up their account.

Other comments about Merk is that Merk states that he/she “chose” Yale over Harvard. Merk clearly states a couple times in his/her 39 posts that he/she did not apply to Harvard so either 1) Claiming to have not applied during those earlier posts was a lie or 2) Merk never had a chance to choose Harvard because Merk never even applied and may never have been admitted.

Also, despite Merk’s claim of having “chosen” Yale there is no sign that Merk was ever admitted to Yale yet claims to have “chosen” it. Actually, there is not sign of Merk begin accepted to ANY school. I am suspicious that Merk’s account is a multiple registration account and a TOS infraction. I am guessing that Merk’s real CC identity has been “accepted” places, maybe even Yale.

Merk might claim that the absence of “acceptances” is because he/she is already attending college but again in the post, his/her application process in the the present tense. Clearly a high school student.

Anyhow, the point is to ignore Merk. If you need any reason to ignore him/her, look at the 39 posts. We are only making him/her happy by responding.

And CC moderators, you might want to check on this account. Is it a duplicate?

Everyone, have a wonderful weekend.

haha smoda I love that someone finally realized I just like getting into arguments for fun.
I’m only a junior but my heart is set on yale. No hard feelings guys - i just think its funny when people get really mad at random strangers. I will leave forever, now that someone has figured me out.

did you tell them you will be attending a ‘finer’ institution?

Wrong, on the internet it’s “fail”, not “failure.” Oh and BTW…

<—is laughing at your fail

^^ yeah this has nothing to with me, but Shalashaka’s right. It IS “fail” in internet jargon.

I mean, I’m all up for some good ol’ fashioned Harvard bashing but you know… couldn’t help pointing that out. ;)

^word. Harvard bashing can be fun, but only when done the right way.

Wow, what a sad little thread. You guys represent the great minds of Harvard and Yale? I really didn’t miss out on much.

The undergrads arent the great minds of anything, lulz.

I think you should go wherever you feel you are happiest. Given the yield, quite obviously hundreds of students who are accepted decide to go elsewhere. The same happens at other universities. I wish you well…

this thread could be about why people don’t choose Harvard when they have a chance. It is clear that some are under a lot of pressure to attend and so it is actually a useful question and thread. The thread appears to have gotten off track because it got sucked into the Harvard Yale rivalry topic which happens to be a perennially stupid topic on the Harvard and Yale forums.

Most people who get into Harvard and go elsewhere do not go to Yale but various other schools. If there is interest in pursuing the OP question, it might be worthwhile finding out where people went and why. It might ensure a few people who might not enjoy Harvard would learn where they might be happier. And of course that would mean more people who really would benefit from and enjoy Harvard would go instead. How many times does it have to be repeated that Harvard, like any place, is not for everyone?? Being “the best” is the worst problem for Harvard in my opinion. There had to be a number one, and Harvard for various reasons has gotten it (being first and richest kind of helps). Unfortunately people over value the idea of what is number one even if it is not meaningful (not only are the best places almost equal, but they are not equally the best, since they have different strengths and weaknesses).

There is no question that many people who go to Harvard would be happier elsewhere. I do not think Yale is the main place people would feel better. Instead, I hope when you read this thread you open your mind to thinking more critically about what motivates you to decide on where you will go.

^ I have a lot of friends who turned down Harvard this year and although I don’t feel like detailing why they did it, I will say where they went. This kind of goes along with your “people are not necessarily happier going to yale” thingy thing…

Me: Yale
Friend 1: Yale
Friend 2: MIT
Friend 3: Stanford
Friend 4: Yale

and that’s it!

turned down harvard for cornell

I didnt apply to any of them. But to be honest, I wouldnt have the testosterone to turn Harvard down. bbbbbuuuuuuuuuuuutttt… there are only 3 schools in the world that I would not mind choosing over Hahvahd. Princeton, Oxford, and Yale. Still, Id pick Harvard over Yale. But probably not over the other two. That’s just me.

I hope I have the choice between Yale and Harvard next year. I’m not sure who I’d pick, but it would probably be Harvard.

4 years ago my son picked Princeton ,over acceptance to Harvard and Yale. Not bashing any school, it was a very hard choice.

i chose Wharton over Harvard, not that i like Harvard any less than Wharton, but just because Wharton apparently prepares you like no other school can at the undergrad.level if you are looking at fields like finance/markets/etc. also, for me, the fact that i cud devote my 4 years entirely to a business education rather than the liberal arts made my decision a tad easier. so that’s that. there are a lot of cross-admits and i am sure all of those, including me, who turned down Harvard had a difficult decision to make.

Vandit- Did you get in? I thought you were waitlisted.

HImom: >>>Those schools were surprised>>>

I doubt it. As Hanna pointed out, UCSF is tops and everyone in the medical world knows it.

To the OP:

I turned down Yale
For a state school, nonetheless.

The horror!

it’s definitely a great feeling to finally choose after such painstaking deliberation but you should NEVER be happy to turn down a school, especially Harvard.
Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled about my decision (Yale over Harvard) because I will be going to YALE next year and could not be more grateful that I was given that choice to make, but I felt very sorry to turn down all the other schools that accepted me. Look at it this way, each school that gave you that coveted letter, no matter how much or how little you cared to go there, had an interest in you so much so that they were thrilled to give you the opportunity to spend the next 4 years of your life there, growing, learning, and loving that place. I still feel like a unique and privileged individual, having been accepted into Harvard, even though I will not be attending next fall. They have high hopes for you and appreciate all the things you’ve accomplished thus far, you should give them the same respect back!
love you Harvard but
IM A BULLDOG ALL THE WAY
