I seek wise advice

So, here is something that is really enticing for some, surprising for others, concerning for still many, and imperative for me to discuss. So let us get right to it.

So, I recently got accepted into Princeton, Yale, Duke, King’s College London and Hofstra University.
Now, again starting with these famous words:‘Some students would sell their families to get into these; well except the last one, I guess, wait! Is that a W.R # 135, tool shed quality and size college I mentioned. How can you even think twice?
Well, yes, not only should I have before applying, about the costs, courses, and literally every dirt(not literally) on the schools I was applying into. Firstly, I completed my high school in India, so not only is the culture of guidance counselors not well conditioned or sometimes at all common, but also I have always relied on myself, my strengths, my research and my parents’ support and everything throughout high school and to the way to a college acceptance.
So, now I am faced with a situation that from my experience and knowledge, only some Ivy League aspirants, then accepted students have to face; some obtain scholarships, full or a lot of aid or can afford all, or the remaining costs after little or no aid/grant/scholarship. I have only received about 20% in financial aid from the two Ivys, and Duke, which compared to the actual annual costs I have to bear, is not much. Then, I applied to Hofstra, not as influential, wealthy, or well-known or recognized for that matter. When, many students apply to smart or ‘good’ back-up options, I did not really know how complicated; first, the process, second, acceptance, third, deciding and considering all facets to make a decision. So, I applied to Hofstra like in April, they also have a rolling decision cycle. So, I did and have got into their selective Honors program, have study abroad options, and a presidential scholarship of about 50% of the costs. So, here is what I thought, and think, getting as much as aid as possible, but, it is the highest an international student can get, because, at Hofstra, I had more than desired SAT scores, subject tests perfect, A.Ps and everything, but only not a weighted GPA, because most schools in India, even mine, considered an excellent one, do not give weighted GPAs. So, I was potentially left out of a full scholarship from Hofstra. I was mad at first, felt hopeless, thinking as to why I did not the amount , or even close to, what I, or someone with my qualifications would expect. Then, I read, about Ronald Nelsons story, some articles , and discussions on this forum, and decided I could still go for Hofstra. Even though they have not offered me a binding financial decision yet, and I have appealed to them.
Even if I have to pay, some amount here, still it will save about 40-50 lakh Indian Rupees in my four years of undergraduate, plus, I am in the process of writing my book, commercializing my blog and hoping to take up some lucrative small and/or part times in America, which is if they don’t increase the amount, but, I am hoping they will. But, my parents think, if we have to pay anyways, why not for Ivy Leagues, and after talking to a relative, who is brainstorming them, and hoping for me to come to Princeton city; she has many reasons why she does want to do that; not all encouraging, they are thinking the same. They believe that brand name is quintessential; agreed, you can get into something similar by working hard in Princeton also, agreed, but it is not easy and direct as it sounds, still I am all for working my butt off, and do not worry about the finances, it is a lot, but we will arrange and do not think abut Graduate schools right now, we will see that later; sure, why not?
But, weeks of soul searching and research, and being highly inspired by Ronald Nelson’s story, I feel that I can make most of education even at Hofstra, still be able to work towards excellent graduate schools, and also save a whole lot of money. And being far-sighted is must, because this is not India we are talking about, the presidential elections are this year, and I do not want anyone: my parents or myself, do come under any financial strain. My brother is graduating from New York Film Academy in 2017, my parents will then have only one child to support,my financial aid could possibly package could shrink, and then we are back to square one. And this is a possibility, not a mere hypothesis. And, I have always valued education over money, but in the modern world, and in the current education and financial scenarios, I believe, that I must be smart and keep all major factors towards my future beneficial research, education and finances in hindsight.
The only thing now, is to get insights and advice from other people, who are experienced or have been in my shoes; enough to convince my parents of my supposed decision, thank you very much.

Could you lease summarize your question? I read your post, and really have no idea what you are saying.

If you can’t afford to pay for,the Ivies…you can not go there.

If you are asking…then yes, you likely got aid at Hofstra because you in the top %ile of accepted students.

Can your family pay half of the cost to attend Hofstra? And yes…of this is need based aid…when your brother is no longer at school, your cost to attend Hofstra will rise.

No, the rise in costs may/will be in almost every private university. In Hofstra,

  1. It will be lesser.
  2. It is sure that scholarship will not decrease, if not increase also, as long as you maintain a certain good GPA.

And, yes we can afford to pay half of those costs. Meanwhile, I am also sure that I will start earning myself, which can contribute a little to the fee here, bit is still less for the costs endured in the Ivys,

And thank you very much for reading this, I really do appreciate it.
Can you also help in getting this to more and more people?

Your ability to work here, and the number of hours, will be restricted by your visa.

How much money do you need to earn to make this work? If it’s more than say $2000, I would guess it will be a challenge for you to earn that here while on a student visa.

In addition, to get that student visa, you will have to complete a verification of finances that shows that you have ALL of the money to cover (at least) your full first year of college. This can include financial aid from your school, approved loans, and parent savings. It can NOT include miney that has not yet been earned.

For Hofstra and Princeton, they have requested my documents, and I have submitted it to them. Now just the seat securing fee and a bank statement has to be submitted to either. And yes, it has to be at least more than $2K p.y, and yes, it is a big challenge to make it work only on student VISA.

So, what other insights do you have to offer, can you tell me something persuasive enough to convince my parents.

This is a conversation to have with your parents. If this is going to stretch them financially, I would vote for, going to undergrad school in India…where there ARE colleges.

And do you understand…if you income goes UP, your need based aid will go DOWN.

Then again, I never intended to study in India, because of the minimal research opportunities and work at an undergraduate level. And, I cannot get the study environment I want and need, in India.

The scholarship won’t go down, but, yes, the need based will.

And I have had a long conversation with my parents, and they have only resolved that they will only want to see me rise, and as Dad quotes" If God has paved a way for you once, he will do it again, and we will arrange the funds", but in reality, I do not see that happening, not easily, and maybe not at all. They also are not able to understand that undegraduate education can be made excellent at any of those universities, that are offering you benefits, reasonable, and can support me for the next four years. I have also contacted many students in this years’ honors program, and they seem like-minded and smart themselves, so there is not really a question of not finding a good and required competition in the program, as my Dad and maternal Aunt based in the U.S stated.

Now, I only ask you to present me some support or some clear verification of any point I have stated above, because, my father has always been encouraged by a second or third opinion, in this case, from experienced and/or U.S residents. And I believe it to be helpful as well.

They let your brother go to film school? Then it shouldn’t be too terribly difficult to convince them about Hofstra!

Well, you have no idea how difficult that was too. He wasn’t that ‘bright’ in social tagging terms, but due to some of the great things he managed to pull-off in his sort of avant-garde photography school, and his TOEFL score, he got accepted there. But, my father needed to be sure that he could pull it off, ensure some return in the future for his own benefit, and be happy while doing it. Still, it was a lot of money, loans required to finalize his admission; even though that was about 55% less costs for 4 semesters, as compared to my own. Still, it took a lot of persuasion, substance to convince him.

“So, I was potentially left out of a full scholarship from Hofstra. I was mad at first, felt hopeless, thinking as to why I did not the amount , or even close to, what I, or someone with my qualifications would expect.”

I think it’s a little arrogant to think that American colleges “owe” someone “with your qualifications” money, when so many American students are unable to go to college here.

You’re asking us how we should convince your father? We don’t know the man.

But if he’s reading (or you intend him to read the responses), then here’s something it would be great if he could understand and communicate to all your compatriots: We on CC are sick and tired of hearing how international students think that “only the Ivies” have brand names that are worthwhile. There are lots of great colleges here in America, the Ivies are merely 8 of them who happen to be concentrated in a certain geographic area. Please stop making the mistake of thinking that colleges in the US hold no future unless they are one of a select handful. That’s simply not at all how it works here, and it’s frustrating when there seems to be no learning curve back to these countries about the reality of American college success.

Pizzagirl, really poor choice of words, it is left as an incomplete sentence. There are no desired qualification for any institution, program, or scholarship; it is just about putting ones best foot forward.

And I, myself, agree to the notion that you have stated that Ivy League schools are only 8 of the many other great universities in America, that is why I posed my dilemma in the first place.

who wrote your application essays?

You have many threads going at the same time. If you want prestige and potentially less cost than the Ivies (depends on your course and if you have any scholarships from there), I recommend King’s College.

quietdespeartion; Well, I wrote that all by myself. I did not have any guidance counselors or someone similar, except my parents, of course, to look at them if required. Why do you ask?

@QuadeSantana1, What can US colleges give you that you can’t get in India? What college will help you get a job when you return home? That’s what you need to convey to your parents. If there’s no clear answer, maybe you should save their money and go to a college in your country.

My concise summary

  • accepted into Princeton, Yale, Duke, King’s College London and Hofstra University.
  • only received about 20% in financial aid from the two Ivys, and Duke
  • got into their Hofstra selective Honors program - presidential scholarship of about 50% of the costs
  • Brother graduating in 2017 could lead to decrease financial aid.

If your parents can afford Princeton or Yale (which both ivies think they can), then spend the money and go.

If you went to Hofstra, I think you would be the only student in the whole campus who could have gotten into Princeton or Yale.

It’s like comparing a Mercedes to a rickshaw.

King’s College is only 3 years - not sure what that costs you.

People are questioning your whether your writing skills are up to ivy league standards because your post is incomprehensible without

  1. copying and pasting to another file
  2. parsing to remove the extraneous (almost all of it)
  3. isolating the relevant facts (as I have).

A lot of opportunities and direction in Astronomy, Astrophyscics and Physics in general; the kind one needs to do substantial research in the future, In India, colleges cannot offer that from the undergraduate level. Besides, I do not plan on coming back to India seeking a job.
My ultimate aim is only to do research to my best interests and rigor, and produce some good results; without having mental and financial constraints to as high as a degree as possible.

Also, the work ethics there, the study environment, more opportunities, more scope for exploration in various fields of life.

But, I have not and will never forget my homeland, if and when I do some substantial research some day, it will for the entire world.

Add me to the list of posters wondering how you got in to those schools with your almost incomprehensible writing style. I think you will have significant difficulty in the coursework at those top schools.
