I serve as a the student rep to the board of education..how can i really make change?

well this is my first year as the student rep to the board of education (its a two year term).
basically i attend meetings with the superintendent of the district and the other board members.
i talk about things such as grading, etc etc
but how can i really take this position as an opportunity to make a difference in my school?

have any of you had a position similar to this? what did you do/speak about at the meetings?
i feel honored to have been selected.

these are the things i want to do:
-change the lunches (OMFG they're so bad)
-change the administration in my school (OMFG they're so incompetent--i would talk trash about the administration if the principal wasnt present at every single meeting :p)
-get more challenging ap classes--right now we only have a total of 7

is this possible if i simply start petitions?
any advice is welcome

Yes, get more challenging ap classes. And if teachers are getting fired, argue against that too (but some teachers may be bad, so don’t let the good ones go).

yeaaaa thankss

Never ever start a petition in a public school.

reallyy?
never start a petition???
why not?

^I got in deep trouble in 9th grade when a group of friends and I made a petition to get a teacher fired. The administration didn’t care that we all gained up against the teacher, but they accused us of promoting democracy in a politically independent environment. In one way or another it was considered protesting which is illegal (or so they say) in a public school.

If your administration is more laxed though, it’s probably all good.

***???! what kind of excuse is that?? when is protesting non-violently ever illegal??!!
its not illegal dude, lol. the constitution tells me so.

^that anger was aimed towards your administration btw :p

What is your full job description as student representative? Is it your place to talk about serious issues and propose changes?

My school’s student representatives are our president and vice president of student council. Basically, they attend the meetings and give a short update on what our school is doing within our community/school. We aren’t really there to give suggestions.

I give you kudos for wanting change, but I would fear of coming off a bit naive if I proposed such changes (like lunch for example). It’s such a cliche thing to go after, but it is something that a lot of schools need to improve. If they really look to you for a student prospective have a very good presentation ready if you want to suggest something so aggressive.

i wasnt never really given a job description  thats why im soo confused.
but yea thanks for the heads-up–nothing is worse than sounding naive

Do not go anywhere near the administration. Do not propose any changes for the administration. That is a very, very bad idea.

I would tackle the AP classes, personally. Lunch is too expensive to change, and you will burn bridges like CRAZY if you attack the administration.

The AP class thing seems to be the best thing to tackle, if you are even allowed to propose changes, which I doubt you are.

Tell them to put less focus on grades, and more on getting kids to enjoy learning.

Adding AP classes seems the best idea though.

Good luck, and have fun!

Damn. That sounds so authoritarian. o.o

LOL yea it did sound authoritarian o_O tsk tsk

but wth am i supposed to do then…
just report on the activities of the student body?

I will definitely talk about increasing the amount of APs

i dont know how well that will work sense um…our student body is just full of people who arent serious about school or are first-generation americans (a large non-english spanish speaking population)

Talk about being reinbursed for the AP exams if that isn’t a policy…

hmmmm…does this sound good?:
um…in our school, it is EXTREMELY easy to get into an AP class…all you need is an A in the previous class (getting an A doesnt require much lol)
and now the AP classes are full of students who dont really belong there–its noisy and no one really cares about the subject…
whats the policy at your schools about how to get into an AP class??

If you fulfill the prerequisites, you can take the class. For example, if you have taken Alg. I, Alg. II, Geometry, and Precalc, then you can take AP Calc.

Our school wants everyone to have a chance for success. And if you can’t handle the courseload after a few weeks, you can drop down to a lower level.

Honestly, if you try to get the board to implement a change such as having to interview or write an essay or give a reccomendation just to take the class, they might cut the APs. The more students who take the AP class, the more likely it is that the class will stay. If it’s difficult to get into the class, only ten will apply for the class. The school will loose an inordinate amount of money because they spent so much giving the teacher extra training and securing more expensive textbooks, etc.

You may also come out sounding pretty conceited. There are always a few students who seem like they don’t “belong” in a class. There’s a reason why the chose it; let THEM decide. If you try to get the school board to decide for them . . . well, won’t you be giving up more of the students’ choice and “power”?

Rupee2 nailed it.

Also, regarding non-violent protests. I read up on this a few years ago. Assuming you live in the United States (you did mention constitution), I recommend you read up on [Tinker vs Des Moines](Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District - Wikipedia). It has been the guiding point for free speech rights in public schools, and was decided by the Supreme Court.

thankss for the feedback! and the link

this position makes you feel like you have soo much power…yet you just dont :p
