I should be first generation

Neither of my parents finished high school or attended university.

However, my mom, who's in her 50s, just recently went off to one of those small career colleges to get a diploma in 8 months because the government subsidized her after she lost her job.

... Does that mean I can no longer say I'm first generation?! I've been seeing a lot of posters talking about how you are no longer first generation if your parents had anything more than a high school education. Not really fair in my situation in my opinion... what do I put down on my application?

It depends on if your mother has her diploma yet. Besides, unless she was educated in a US high school and goes to like a university where undergrads/grads go to then you would be first gen.

Otherwise, do what I would and ask your guidance counselor or an admissions rep from a college you DON'T plan on applying to. Good luck.

Incorrect, the definition of 'first gen' is that your parents have never gone beyond HS, have never enrolled in college.

The definition is what it is. Applications don't ask if you're first gen, they ask the highest level of education for your parents. You'll put down the name of the college and the degree earned.

It does not matter where you were educated. If your parents have gone to college any where in the world, you are not a first generation college student.
