Hi, I'm an IB Junior with a weighted GPA of 4.76. I just got my PSAT results back and I got a 1670; my goal is to get at least an 1800, though. I'm an active member of Key Club, It's Academic, and a general member of SGA (student council). I'm also in Marching Band and I'm just starting a beautification project within in my school. My dream college is Johns Hopkins University but I don't know if I'm doing well enough in school to go there..
with everything that I just listed, do you think that I have a shot for Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of California: Berkeley, Cornell University, or Duke University? Thanks :)

Don’t take this the wrong way, but unless you get your scores up to 2100+, you don’t have much of a shot to get into any of those colleges. Have you tried test prep?

^^ This

For the colleges you are looking at you will pretty much need a 2100. If you have a 4.76 weighted gpa that is possible, unless your school has rampant grade inflation.

What’s your intended major?

Just based on your current and projected SAT scores (I can’t judge your gpa because it’s weighted and because I don’t know the rigor of your coursework relative to what your school offers), all of the schools you’ve listed are high reaches. An 1800 would place you below the 25% range of accepted students for all those colleges, and many of those in that range will be hooked applicants.

Use the College Board College Search function to see the 25:75 SAT ranges for colleges.

Be aware that the objective of putting together a college list is to include admissions and financial safety, match and reasonable reach schools.

So if I don’t get at least in the 2000s on my SAT, I won’t have a chance to get into these schools?

My son’s high school in NOVA uses a system where they track college acceptances from the past year. Last year, it had five students get into Hopkins and two of them had very high GPAs but SATs’ just below 2000. So it is not impossible with less than 2000 on SAT, but still a reach.

Oh… okay. So I should probably study a lot harder and reach the 2000s for a better chance to get accepted.

For this selectivity of schools, my rule of thumb is that 2100 gets your foot in the door, 2250+ is better.

Don’t take our words for it, go here:

[College Search - Find colleges and universities by major, location, type, more.](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Search for a college, hit the SAT/AP/CLEP button and you’ll see the middle 50% SAT scores. In addition, these schools have low acceptance rates, which makes them reaches even if you have high SAT scores, albeit ‘reasonable’ reaches.

It’s not that you don’t have a chance, it’s just that the chance you have is incredibly small.

Your test score (even you if you improve to an 1800) will be below the average. Even with a 2000 I’d say your chances are slim. What’s your UW gpa?

Also, not to sound harsh, but your ECs aren’t outstanding and therefore won’t be much help in the admissions process. If you want to get in with subpar academics, then you need good ECs

I hope you realize that your life will not be over if you don’t go to one of these places. Even if you get admitted, you might end up going somewhere else due to financial or other reasons. Be sure to apply to less selective colleges too. Good luck!!
