Sophomore's College List

I'm currently a sophomore in high school and have started looking into colleges. My weighted GPA is 4.73 and I am hoping to have taken 10 AP classes by the time I graduate. I am in the concert band and the jazz band and am on the sailing and golf teams... just as some background knowledge.

I took the SAT once in 7th grade for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, but have not taken it since. I had about a 1450 then, but am confident that I can do MUCH better now!

Oh, and I'm from Maryland if that matters at all...

Anyway, here's the colleges I'm looking into thus far-

Reach Schools:
UCLA
USC
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins
George Washington University
Georgetown
Duke
UNC

Safety Schools:
University of Arkansas
University of Kansas
George Mason University
James Madison University
Washington College

Middle:
New College of Florida
UCSD
University of San Diego
University of Maryland

What do you think? What else do I need to be doing as a sophomore to be preparing for college? Are there too many schools on my list?

As for majors I'm interested in a combination of either math, engineering, or computer science with music.

Your list looks pretty good, though depending on what the rest of your app looks like GW could be a match. Focus on enjoying sophomore year, next year prepare for and do well on your standardized tests and don’t forget about ECs. Hope this helps and good luck!

Look into **************.com or similar websites to find out more about each school.

Try the ACT too. I did much better on my ACT. And I personally think standardized test scores make a big difference in the schools you’re looking at if you improve a lot (2090->2220 and 32->34 personally). I’d try to get good test scores early so you can get serious about the schools you’re applying to early. Right now, I think you have a good list of schools, but it’ll naturally narrow down as you improve your app and look at each school more closely. Overall, it looks like you have a great start as a sophomore!

And don’t forget about teacher recommendations! I probably could have gotten better recs if I hadn’t done the bare minimum to get As junior year.
