Hi there,

I'm a long time lurker here, finally made an account after so much time. Anyways, I was accepted to Rice and several other colleges but upon randomly reviewing my common app today on a whim, I noticed I made a big, big mistake. I'm in my school choir, and where I go to school, choir is an elective, meaning, it's a class that goes on the transcript but it is not mandatory. We get ready for various concerts and concerts during the school day in first period. I, along with others in choir, thought that the hours spent in class count as part of the EC: so 1 hour per day --> 5 hours per week --> roughly 35 weeks per year. That is what I put on my app. However, I've heard conflicting views that an EC is outside of school only, not something already on a transcript. Is what I did horribly wrong? I mean, I honestly thought that it counted at the time... did Rice and the other schools accept me because of that, wrongfully? Or am I just being paranoid?

P.S. I didn't specify that it was choir, I just wrote, "singing" because I sing in choir... :/

Do you mean that on your app you just wrote “Singing” “5 hr/week” but that singing was actually not an extracurricular but part of a class? If you didn’t even explain it I doubt they weighed that too heavily in your decision. If you did explain it they probably put 2 and 2 together and figured that you accidentally counted it as an EC. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, but if you really feel guilty then call up admissions and explain the situation. They’ll probably just thank you for calling and send you on your way.

On my app, I put “Music:Vocal” for 5 hr/week when it was part of the class. Underneath, I listed some awards and explained the following: “Singer in [school’s name] choir with seven years of training (private instruction and school-based).” The private instruction was for 2-3 years, but that is the way my Business teacher phrased it when she edited my resume (I used bits of my resume - copy and paste - on the common app). My friends think I’ll look very paranoid and dumb if I call admissions, so idk. :/

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, its a non issue if your accepted already.

Don’t worry about it. My daughter who is going to Rice, plays plays in the school band/jazz band, a youth symphony and takes private lessons. The university knows it is impossible to separate out her practice hours for youth symphony, school jazz band and her private lessons. They will assume those hours you reported are somewhat merged.

Thanks, Arrozdad and Ladyengineer. :)

@Ladyengineer: The hours I put pertained to school only as I had to stop my private lessons due to financial hardships. But as Arrozdad said, it’s a non issue.

The likelihood of your application being in the reject pile had the choir not been on there is approximately zero, so you’re fine.

Further, you are not in violation of the statement you signed on your application, as it says something to the effect of “All the information contained in this application is correct to the best of my knowledge.” At the time of your signing, the information was correct to the best of your knowledge. Therefore, you filled out your application honestly.
