I think i screwed myself over =[ [really need some advice]

(not sure if this is in the right thread)

Let's just say i learned an academic lesson the hard way.

Before i enrolled into 3 different classes at 3 different community colleges for summer school; my gpa was roughly 3.44ish. I'm a commuter student and i've completed 43 units so far. My gpa is now a miserable 3.193 and come this November, we all know what happens in Nov. So my major is Business administration with a concentration in accounting. Colleges i want to apply to are CSULB, CSUPomona, and maybe CPSLO. USC is very desirable but i know my gpa must go way up before i can even attempt to apply there.

I took the chance to find out my what-if scenarios so if i got 5 straight A's [3 unit classes for a semester school] my gpa goes up to 3.401, another 5 A's -- 3.524, and another 5 A's -- 3.605. Which means by next spring semester if i played all my cards right and got extremely lucky, the highest my gpa could be is a 3.605 with 15 successful classes. I speculate if i can complete roughly 12-13 classes it may be a 3.57ish.

Given my situation, should i stay another year in CC to raise my gpa up so i can get into places like USC, Univ of San Diego or CPSLO? IF i did this option, the highest my gpa could be would fall between a 3.78 - 3.73 with about >25clases completed.

The funny thing is i got very poor grades in classes some ppl would label as auto A's. ANd the lesson i learned is not over doing it especially when it comes to managing time with a 16hr a week job.

The only thing holding me back from staying another year in CC is the fact i could be working one year closer towards my BA or BS degree in Biz Admin soo i'm not sure if it would be worth it to waste another year in CC. I know i have now gained something to really motivate myself and possibly something to write about when personal essays are due...

I really need help on this...please.

“Given my situation, should i stay another year in CC to raise my gpa up so i can get into places like USC…”

Just apply. No need to wait. I know a lot of 1st year transfers that got into USC. 3.4 isn’t bad.

yeah but it isn’t exactly easy to get into the marshall school of business. i think i’m going to have to put UC riverside on my list now. fuahhhhhhhhhh =[

I dont see a problem with all those CSU’s, you should get in fine. USC will be VERY tricky to get in, but you could easily go to UCI, UCR, UCSB…whats wrong with these places?

I would stay and try to raise up your gpa as much as possible if you truly want to go to some of those schools. I don’t know what gpa USD looks for, but I would shoot for at least a 3.5-3.6 for Cal Poly SLO since transferring into that school is NOT easy. Pomona and Long Beach aren’t difficult to transfer into and a gpa above 3.1 should get you in. The uc’s should be no problem and a gpa around 3.2-3.6 is definitely acceptable. And USC is always an option if you’re actually able to raise your gpa up to the 3.6 range

if you REALLY want to go to uc san deigo why dont you stay another year and sign a TAG? where your guaranteed admission…and your at a cc you already have more priority than other people to get in the schools you want. I think you should just apply to ALL the schools you want now…and see what you do get into and dont get into and decide from there. you should be able to get into csu’s with a 3.0 or higher but i dont know about cal poly slo

my gpa was far worse than yours…
i could have applied last year and been through with my junior year by now, but instead DID choose to stay at CC for another year to raise my gpa.
it was a long and boring wait, but now that my acceptance to UCLA is actually real, i feel incredibly good about the decision.

 • upward academic trends do get noticed…

I’d apply to all the schools and simply plan out my intended path from there. I’m also thinking about staying another year to raise my GPA, but hey, you never know, so take a chance and apply. You’re not losing anything but money, or so I think. Delaying graduation time too I suppose, but eh it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Pinkerfloyd you’re a pretty cool guy haha. Whenever I stumble upon a thread in which the OP has lost all hope, (mine included, a while back) Pinker is always there to give hope to others. That’s damn admirable. Respect.

Thank you all who replied back; yall inspired some hope in me :slight_smile: and made my day =D

UCSB doesn’t offer a BA/BS degree in Biz Administration. UCI just started their undergrad biz program last fall so no one really knows how well the program may be. In my eyes; it’s a big gamble to attend that college for a program no one has any experience with. I do think location wise, it’s a better decision than UCR. But i think UCR history of their undergrad biz program outweighs UCI history of undergrad for biz.

@dashboardjordan
After more research, i decided i solely want to attend colleges in socal. CPSLO is only 3 hrs away from me and i really want to experience life in a different environment for the next 4-6 yrs. My plan is to satisfy prerequisites for the aforementioned colleges and base my decision off the feedback i’ll get. Getting into USC will definitely be a mighty challenege but it won’t hurt to try.

@determined91
Not UCSD; USD. USD is a private college in SD and costs a butt load lol. And i’ve always had your idea of mass distributing but you basically said it for me heh.

@pinkerfloyd
Ohh nice man! That must’ve been annoying staying another year in CC but you got a big pay off in the end =]. I wonder how many total units you completed when you transferred? haha I’ll PM you soon; i’ve got some more questions for you.

@Levonid
Yeahh actually staying another year would financially be a better decision for me. It’s pretty much a Time vs Money issue lol. Pick your poison right? wahahah

getting a 4.0 in CC is really easy. i worked about 20 hrs a wk and took 4 classes in fall and 5 classes in spring and got 4.0 both semesters. i quit my job so i can concentrate in finishing my IGETC, USC general ed, and Haas breadth in 2 yrs. i need to take 24 units in the fall tho. anyway, getting into usc shouldnt be too hard. 3.4ish with EC will get u in

@lake
did you even read my thread? it’s kind of insulating for you say how easy it is to get a 4.0 knowing my situation. quitting my job isn’t an option for me. you really don’t know how difficult it is to get into Marshall; applicants who got in from this board that posted their stats had an average gpa of roughly 3.75 with some decent EC’s.

^^i did read ur post. and i dont understand what or how ur situation is so unusual. i’m a commuter as well. my cc is 20 miles away from my house. i worked 20-35 hours a week, took 18 units a semester and getting a 4.0 was still easy. and i do know about Marshall. i’m applying there too. their requirements are NOT hard. 3.7 is not that hard to get at CC. but if its hard for u then u should stay at CC for 3 yrs to make sure u get straight A’s and boost ur gpa to around a 3.7. this will also give u enough time to complete TAP/honors program to other UCs if u want

@lake
the college i commute to is about 45miles away from my home. my local community college is complete garbage because it doesn’t have articulation agreements with most state colleges including CSULB; which is where i attend to attend next fall. i would agree to the classes required aren’t hard but as i mentioned earlier; the highest my gpa could reach for next spring is like 3.58 and that’s a BIG MAYBE. because im in a time vs money situation; i think i rather attend LB and do an accelerated program so i can obtain my BA/MA in about 6 yrs then work the field for 4-5yrs then go back to get my MBA.

that’s if i get into LB;if not, i’ll stay another year and definitely have a shot at USC. given my situation, it’s going to be extremely hard to win scholarships with the gpa i might have so i firmly believe my situation is unique.

Gosh. People on this site are kinda mean. You guys dont know all of this guys situation. Come on…give him a break. So he doesnt have a 4.0…that doesnt mean all is lost. The egos around here are pretty out of control. Come back down to earth people.

yeahhh some ppl live in ivory towers on this board but it’s whatevers.

I think its just funny. We’re all Community College students, looked down upon by all of academia. I think the egos on here are just a defense mechanism for insecurity.

I agree, just because some douch bag gets a 4.0 at his CC…he thinks everyone on earth should be able too. Not true. Some majors are different, some are more difficult, some schools are different, some situations are different, and most importantly people are different. Just because you get a 4.0 at CC does not mean your smarter or any more qualified than my high school drop out cousin who would destroy you in a political current events debate. People are different. For me getting a 4.0 would be tough because I have a life.

Would you be insinuating that only people with no life can achieve a 4.0, or just that you could not handle having a life and achieving a 4.0?

Vintij you’re like the ultimate ■■■■■ lol.

I somewhat agreed with you until:

"For me getting a 4.0 would be tough because I have a life. "

ehhh, wrong answer. would you like to try again?

@vintiji "For me getting a 4.0 would be tough because I have a life. " – i think you meant to say it might be hard for you to manage your time effectively;balancing social/academic life with or without a job. there’s some d-bags on this forum who boast about skipping classes and still pull off an A.

@collegehopeful18
i can somewhat see a reason why the academia looks down upon us because us CC student have an easier access to auto A classes. pretty much ratemyprofessors.com is our academic Achilles heel. just shooting this thought out; i think at state/UC/private level, those classes aren’t as abundant as they are in CC’s. so maybe that’s why we get some haters???

occasionally; there are some CC professors who do push stricter standards like those found in CSU’s/UC’s and actually make you learn something useful. but for the most part i think are too many CC professors who are a joke because they simplify the class so much ppl can get away with ditching and earn their A whereas elsewhere;it’s not the same.
