Low CSU GPA to CCC to CSU (or even UC) possible?

*this thread has been posted on the regular transfer thread; someone advised me to put this thread on here too (need all the help I could get)

I think this type of question has been asked before (but I couldn't find it); but anyone had any success in transferring from CCC to another CSU (or even UC) with a history of a bad gpa from a different CSU?

I went to CSU Pomona for 2 years and ended up with a 1.82 gpa

Absent from any form of school for 2~3 years and just started CCC

Counselor at CCC advised that I should try to repeat the classes I failed

I have 3 F's (4 D's but I can't really make that up) and all of them are transferable 4 unit courses

CSU Pomona allows up to 16 units to be eligible of repeats (brief moment of happiness)

I can only repeat the classes only at CSU Pomona

Don't have the financial means to move away from home and attend Pomona

I have excuses for why I did so poorly at csu pomona, but I don't think that is relevant (admissions offices don't care for excuses) so I won't bother listing them. I really want to finish my academic career, and acquire a Bachelor's in something. Has anyone been in a similar situation and were able to transfer? Is it impossible for me at this point in considering of transferring to another CSU?

The only solutions I could think of is either...
A. Go to CCC to boost gpa to at least 2.00 and plan in the near future to attend CSU Pomona for one more quarter to repeat those three F's (which will take considerable amount of financial planning). Come back to CCC if I still have 30 or more units to complete to transfer (hopefully).
B. Go to CCC try to boost my gpa as much as possible; choose a major which will not look at transferable units which I have failed in (I'm not sure if I'm correct on this).

I know its unfair for others for me to try to take up space again at a CSU when I already had a shot... but I still have to try.

[Academic Renewal](Academic Policies)

Your best bet all csu should have a policy similar to that one

Forgiveness of Previous Term(s)
Under the most extenuating circumstances, students can petition to exclude from degree requirements and GPA computations up to three quarters (or up to two semesters) of coursework taken at any institution.

To have a petition approved, a student must meet certain conditions and follow the process described below.

Approval of a petition requires satisfaction of all the following conditions:
the coursework to be excluded does not represent the student’s scholastic ability, and that this substandard performance was due to an extenuating circumstance;
the student would be compelled to complete additional courses or enroll in additional quarters to achieve the baccalaureate degree if the petition is not approved;
five years have elapsed since the most recent coursework to be excluded was completed
Students must complete the following steps:
complete the student’s portion of the “Academic Renewal, Forgiveness of Previous Term(s)” petition available in the Student Information Lobby
obtain the major advisor’s approval on the petition
file the petition in the Student Information Lobby. If eligible, Enrollment Management certifies that the student meets the above conditions, attaches a copy of the student’s academic record, and forwards the package to the Academic Renewal committee in the Provost’s Office. The committee acts upon all petitions by majority vote.
If Enrollment Management determines a student does not meet the conditions, the student is notified and no action is taken.

Cal State East Bay honors the exclusion policies of the originating institution. Each term excluded by another institution reduces by one the number of terms that Cal State East Bay will consider for exclusion.

Problem is do you have a special circumstance that caused to have those grades? Oh also just noticed 5 years has elapsed nm

I would say your screwed =/ wait 5 years or find a way to pay for pomona

Yea it seems like the option you’ve mentioned isn’t viable for my circumstance. It seems like it is worth going back to csu Pomona (which I dread).

Here are some very optimistic comparisons (hopefully my math is right)

Repeating two 4 unit courses and getting A’s in it will make my GPA to 2.27
compared to…
Taking two 4 unit courses and getting A’s in it will make my GPA to 2.04

Repeating three 4 unit courses and getting 2 A’s, 1 B in it will make my GPA to 2.44
compared to…
Taking three 4 unit courses and getting 2 A’s, 1 B in it will make my GPA to 2.09

So right now the only hope I have is to bump my gpa up to 2.0 at CCC (hopefully I will be eligible for some type of financial aid) go back to CSU Pomona for at least one quarter to repeat those classes.

*I just realized that even if I could repeat 3 of the classes and get 5 A’s in any random transferable classes my GPA will still wouldn’t pass 2.8. At this rate I could only probably graduate from a CSU with a low impacted major…sigh

REPEAT ALL OF YOUR COURSES. ALL OF THEM.
plan on taking around 60-100 semester units total
get that 3.0ish GPA and you’re set for most CSUs.

I wish I could repeat all my courses, but CSU Pomona only lets you retake 16 units. I wish I could just restart fresh at a community college, but it seems like that I can’t get rid of my old transcript.
I also looked into renewals…but that is only viable when I’m graduating. Also, I think I would have to prove some how that during the quarter of study that there were circumstances beyond my control that prevented me from doing well.

After couple two years of CC here is how I stand…
-Cal Poly Pomona gpa 1.82
-CC gpa 3.42 (expecting on improving it to 3.5 by this semester)
-Cal Poly Pomona 71.0 quarter units / ~47.3 semester units
-CC 46 semester units
-Rough average of total gpa is ~2.6

It seems I still have a year (year and a half) to go before transferring. Finally decided on a major (computer science). I’ve completed all of my IGETC requirements for transfer, but I still need 20 semester units to be eligible for transfer for most schools.

I have a couple of concerns…

 1. It seems that my units exceeds the transferable units allowed for most csu/uc (average tending to be 86 semester units). I’ve talked to counselors/csu reps/uc reps and their answers seem varied. Some say that units exceeding it wouldn’t matter, it just means I wouldn’t be getting credit for extra credits I have. Others say that I can’t exceed the units. The rest say that due to being originally from a 4 year school they really don’t know (and should talk to different person, lol).
 2. How do schools calculate my gpa in consideration for admissions? I have a few repeated classes, but due to being from quarter to semester units I don’t know how to adjust for grades. Some schools I’ve asked said they average the two repeated classes, others say they would take the better grade.
 3. Unlikely, but is it possible for me to be admitted to a UC later?

@jonjon03

They do have a unit limit for transfer applicants with four-year college credit that generally makes you ineligible for admission at some schools. Not all schools have the same policy so you should look them up one by one. Call them directly and ask, don’t rely on your friends or counselors/representatives. Make sure that all of your failed courses have been repeated with a passing grade. Also know that UCs only take into account UC-transferable classes, all other classes do not count towards your units/unit limit or your GPA. Different schools may articulate courses differently and I think UCI might accept senior transfers, although you should really call them and ask directly. See if you can work with them to create a plan for transfer.

Thanks for the reply;

I did a quick check and so far I compiled a quick list:
San Jose State University - no unit cap
Cal Poly Pomona - no unit cap
UC Irvine - no unit cap
CSU Sacramento - no unit cap
UC Berkeley - no unit cap (but gpa cut off is at 3.8 I think… so no chance getting in there)
Cal Poly SLO - unit cap
UCD - unit cap

I should probably call/email the registrar and/or admissions office. Probably will after finals.

HI Jon, i first attendted csula and left the school with a 1.1 gpa, then i went to various ccs and got a total of 3.30 gpa and I just got accepted to davis, sb and irvine. At the CSU i got one F and one C+ and the rest were non-transferable and apparantly the UC’s calculated the F and the C+ for a total gpa of 3.31. I have a total of 103.5 quarter units by this spring. And yes you MUST NOT PASS THE UNIT CAP or else you’re screwed. Each campus has a different unit cap limit too so watch out for that too. you have 47 semester units so you still can take courses to reach at most 70 units or even 80 units before the cap. So if you get straight As you can prolly even make it to a UC. Good luck!

Ya, I thought UCI didn’t have one. Have you repeated all of your failed grades? UCs will replace the old ones with the new. What’s you’re UC transferable GPA (not cumulative) now? Remember to use the new grades for repeated courses and include only UC-transferable courses when calculating your UC GPA.

BTW I repeated the failed course from csu at a cc and they still calculated both grades. I guess you can only repeat it from a csu to csu or a cc to a cc.

Go here and create a test dummy account and type in all your courses. This will give you two gpa’s the assist which is transferable and the non transferable
http://uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu/</a></p>

The UCs counted my non transferable…

I think most of my classes from CC is CSU/UC transferable (probably -7~8 units). For Cal Poly I’m not sure; their class schedule doesn’t specifically mention if its transferable or not. I checked assist (counselor once used it to see if a class was transferable), and when I choose Cal Poly Pomona I don’t see UC Davis (aside Vet school) as an option. Does that mean that those two schools have no articulated agreement, therefore none of my Cal Poly classes is transferable? If so it’s great news! I just only have redo couple of basic GE classes to fulfill transfer (not to mention significant GPA boost).

For the grades, I think I remember specifically at least UC davis averages two grades (ie F at csu and A at cc means overall a C grade).

Ok…this might be a little messy to understand (hopefully it makes sense)…

Cal Poly Pomona, Grade Points: 129.4
Cal Poly Pomona, Units Attempted: 71
Cal Poly Pomona that was D+ or lower (and been repeated at CC), Grade Points: 16.6
" , Units Attempted: 26

I subtracted out the classes that is replaced, so…
129.4 - 16.6 = 112.8
71 - 26 = 45

Adjusted Cal Poly Pomona, 112.8 gp/45 ua

I convert Cal Poly quarter units to semester (by multiplying 0.66)
Semester Adjusted Cal Poly Pomona, 74.44 gp/29.7 ua

add that to my current CC, 159 gp/46 ua

My current gpa (if class replaced) should be ~ 233.44/75.7 which is about a 3.08gpa

Not a great gpa, but certainly better than 1.8. Still my units either already exceeded, or dangerously close to exceeding the average unit cap.

Again, thanks for all the replies. Every little information helps^^

Jon
pay attention to what i am saying.

I said that UCs did end up calculating my classes that were not articulated.

Go and create a test dummy account on [University of California : Transfer Admission Guarantee](http://uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu/) this will calculate your overall gpa for you!

Good Luck

@CosmicBubble,

Actually right after my last post I saw your message, been working on it ever since.

I had to manually add classes for Cal Poly Pomona, and marked repeats. The result the TAG test gave me was…

ASSIST certified courses: 3.42
Non-assist certified courses: 2.87
Overall: 3.11

I’m not sure if UC Davis will let me use CC classes as repeats for Cal Poly. Still not a good gpa.
Also, I’m a bit confused about TAG. UC Davis rep said I can’t do TAG, because I already attended a 4-year school. However, when I check their web site there is no mention of being ineligible due to attending 4-year school in the past.

Again thanks for all the help.

Well to answer your last question, each campus has their own rules regarding their tag.

Your overall gpa is what will be most likely used to calculate your gpa by UCs. I didn’t tag anywhere. 3.1 the exact gpa i have right now and look at me I got accepted to 3 UCs! lol If you are doing a non impacted major then go for it and don’t give up!

Wow it has been nearly FOUR YEARS since I posted this thread. I hope at least one person in my position years ago gets to read this update.

After I created this thread I did indeed spoke with a UCD rep, and at that time she did indeed say I’m not eligible for UCD tag. Also, I could not officially able to repeat classes that I have failed at Cal Poly Pomona. Everything looked dim at the time academically and life in general, but I didn’t give up.
After many hours of studying and then some more studying, I was able to get my cc gpa up to 3.71, but my Cal Poly Pomona gpa remained as low as ever. I started to get involved with the school, actually meet people, join clubs, and generally put myself out there. Initially, I felt out of place (cause of the age gap), but I soon realize my peers and I were more alike. So what if my maturity level is a bit behind what my age dictates it should be, what matters is that I’m improving and growing. I remember watching “Step Brothers” and feeling a sharp pain to my stomach. “What if I become a man-child,” not being able to leave the nest" were questions that haunted me.
Also, choosing a major was a pain. It took years to figure out what I wanted to do. In high school, and many years afterwards, I didn’t even have the slightest idea what I wanted to do. The thing is…no one should really know what they want to do until they have done it. I put myself out there, worked at odd places, tried new things. I had to actually go OUT and DO STUFF to actually to figure out an inkling of what I wanted to do. Once I actually figured out what I wanted to major in, I couldn’t believe how obvious it was. I don’t expect my interest to remain the same. I can’t say for sure my interest will remain the same, but what I can say if it does change I will commit to the same process as before which is to go out and do stuff to figure out what I’m interested in.

Wow this became a bit of ramble, I will try to make it short.

Due to a policy change, I lucked out and was able to apply for UCD tag and have been accepted for tag^^ My life in general have had many positive shifts. It’s been a long while since I last been this optimistic of my future. I just finished submitting my application for UCs and CSUs. I’m actually trying for Berkeley, and that’s a real long shot, but hey why not.

So for those who once were like me, don’t give up. At the time whenever people like CosmicBubble told me not give up, I still had doubts and apprehension. I just couldn’t believe it. I’m not sure what I can say to help other people get out of the rut I was in years ago, but at least do try. It will hurt, you will be exhausted, but its worth it.

I’m not great at writing and for the past few days I did nothing but writing (reworking personal statements for UCs so admittingly I’m a bit tired of checking my writing), so I apologize for all the grammatical mistakes (and in general the incoherence of this post).

Again, I hope this incoherent post motivates at least one person. Also, to those who have posted to this thread, thank you. Especially CosmicBubble, at times of uncertainty I came back to thread to check, make sure, that I have actually made improvements. That last two words from CosmicBubble had stuck with me every time I read this. So thank you.

Haven’t followed your journey through the years but have just finished reading your whole thread. Just wanted to say GOOD JOB man. Really happy to see that you put in all the hard work after being shot down so much and still kept your belief that you can overcome all your hardships and previous failures in life in order to make yourself a brighter future. Keep at it and keep this post updated throughout your academic career. I’m definitely interested to see how everything works out for you, cheers! :)

I’m not sure if anyone followed this post or not, but I thought today would be appropriate for another update.

GPA: 3.5 (after TAU)
Major: Computer Science
Major GPA: 4.0 (not really sure how to calculate major gpa, but all the classes listed on assist I got As in)
IGETC: Yes
Personal Statement: Not sure how good it is, but it most definitely answered the prompt.
Accepted: UCD, UCI, UCSD, CSUS, UCLA
Pending: UCB, UCSB
Rejected: Cal Poly Slo, SJSU, SDSU

I still can’t believe I got into UCLA. When I first posted this thread I thought it was nearly hopeless to get into any UCs. I hope this thread will help someone in the future with similar circumstances. It took a long time, but it worked out^^
