Post your UC transfer questions here!

Hi everyone,

This thread is for any UC transfer questions anyone may have. I owe a lot to College Confidential and would like to help out future transfer students. I'm a UC Davis transfer student for Fall 2012 for CS. I can try my best to answer your questions as honestly as I can.

I am a current CSU East Bay student. I just finished my sophomore year there, with a 4.0 GPA. My extracurricular activities include being in several clubs (Global Medical and Dental Brigades, Math and Science Service Learning Club, Philosophy Society, Pre-Health Academic Association, Pilipino American Student Association, Catholic Club, Young Democrats Organization), as well as being in the Sigma, Sigma, Sigma sorority.

In addition, I was a strong high school student, with AP scores in Biology (4), English Language and Composition (4), English Literature and Composition (3), and Psychology (5). I also have ACT/SAT scores and SAT-II subject scores in 5 subjects.

I would love to transfer to a UC, although I know it would be difficult, as CSU to UC transfers have the least priority. The UCs I would like to transfer to are (in order of preferance) UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis, although I am not opposed to UC Merced or UC Riverside.

After my high school graduation, I was admitted to UC Santa Cruz, but was rescinded because of a D in my Calculus class… yea, math isn’t my subject. :P

But anyway, I want to be a bio major, and hopefully double major with psychology.

How high are my chances to transferring to a UC?

I think you have a good chance as a CSU student. I’m not too sure on how the transfer process is from CSU to UC, but from CCC to UC I know they don’t care for your HS transcripts after the second year. Regardless, you’ve done pretty well for them to disregard your D in HS. I think you have a good chance for the top tier UC’s. Apply to the top 5-6 UC’s and see where you get in. I think you have a great chance!

I am so looking forward to possibly being in your place this time next year. Congratulations!
What was your GPA? Is CS a pretty impacted major at Davis? I’m applying for chemistry, but I’m just curious. With all this hype about 2013 being a super competitive year for transfers, I just want to consider every possibility.
Also, on an unrelated note, What have you chosen in terms of housing? A friend of mine has a cousin who commutes from Vacaville and I know another student whose lived on campus for all her three years there so far. I’ve heard pros and cons from both.
And finally, did you TAG to Davis? Or somewhere else?
Thank you thank you thank you! :)

Hey lunchbox 31. I had around a 3.5 after my Fall semester at City College. I know of someone that got in to the CS program at Davis with a 3.3 as well. CS is not impacted through the letters and science program. There is also CS through Engineering. 2013 is going to be very competitive, especially with the rise of applicants. 2012 was also very competitive. I will be dorming. As a transfer or freshman student, it is really important to dorm your first year so you can get a feel of the community that you will be spending the rest of your college years in. It’s also a great way to meet people. Actually, probably the best way to meet people. I could not TAG because spent only two semesters at city college when you need to spend at least 3 semesters.

How do you know that there will be a rise in applicant next year?

I disagree that living in a dorm is important. It may be important for some, but for others it can be harmful. Dorms are generally more expensive than apartments and you get a lot less in exchange for the community. But some people don’t need the community, and would be much better off having cheaper rent with their own room/studio, kitchen, and bathroom.

The rise is actually what has been in discussion recently. If you keep up with the UC news, you would know.

It depends on the person, but dorming is definitely a great option. I’m not one for living with people, so I chose the option where I could have my own room, and I would share a bathroom with just one other person. School for me will be payed in loans, grants, and scholarships. No out of pocket. I have many friends that dorm, and they said that’s where they met most of their friends. I know a couple people that transferred and didn’t dorm, and they regret not dorming because it was much harder for them to make friends and to stay within the community.

Please feel free not to answer this rather personal question but I have to ask. How much did you receive in grants and scholarships? Did you ever use the UC financial aid calculator and if so was it at all accurate?
Don’t answer if that’s too much. I completely understand!
Thanks again!

UC news? So this has been stated by the UCs? Can you link me?

@Shannon13,
I’m not too knowledgable about this, but I think himymm is refering to the plan for admissions freeze in the CSU system. CSUs may be restricting admissions for fall 2013 and as a result, many more applicants will be reliant on CC and UC. Google “CSU 2013 admissions freeze”, I heard about it on the forums but I haven’t adequately researched it so I may be off.

Yeah, can you post that link in this thread…please. Eeks.

Oh okay objection, ive heard of that. And it would make sense how that would cause the number of people wanting to transfer to ucs to rise, but if they were already capable of it wouldnt they already be looking to transfer to a uc?

@Cokelly
Maybe. But I knew plenty of people in high school, who may or may not be qualified for UC, that would rather die than go to CC. I know, sad. They aren’t really aware of the money savings. Without CSU as a backup, they’ll try harder for UC. Furthermore, my time at CC as shown me that there are a good handful of people who underestimate their intelligence. They don’t think they are smart enough to be admitted to UC, and settle for CSU without even trying to apply for UC. If they realize their transfer plans may be in jeopardy, they may actually apply for UC and there will be your admissions pool increase.

I found an article and it’s very speculative. Everything depends on whether the tax is approved or not. If it isn’t, then it seems that UC freshmen applications will be affected in fall 2013 but not necessarily transfer. CSUs won’t keep their freeze forever, so those that desperately want to attend CSUs can apply for spring 2013 (transfer) or fall 2014 for everyone.

I’m not worried about UCs being harder to get into next year for transfers. Freshmen should be worried though. And those that depend on TAG should probably plan for another GPA requirement increase.

Hi there!

So I will not be attending UCSB Transfer orientation…and I’m worried that since my registration date is on September 6, I won’t be able to get any classes. Any ideas or person experiences?

So if you got a 4.0 GPA from a CCC near your perspective university, a related internship, worked a part time job, & was a TA for a lot of your classes should freshmen still be scared? How serious is this increase going to be? & is it definitely going to happen?

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

^^If you’re going to a CCC, then you wouldn’t be a freshman. 4.0 non impacted majors shouldn’t be scared anyway. And as I just said, we have no idea what will happen or if anything will happen. Even if something does happen, we have no idea if it will affect us, or if it does, when it will.

Best not to worry about it. There are too many "if"s to make any assumptions right now.

It sounds like these people would still mostly effect the lower tier UCs then like merced, Santa Barbara, etc. How much would it effect top teir UC transfers like Berkeley or LA?

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

Oh okay xD I.thought because I was cuncurrently enrolled and would have to stay a semester or year at a CCC after highschool to take the transfer route I wouldnt technically be a freshman XP right now.

When you transfer, you must have 60 units which will make you junior status. You can apply as a freshmen with CCC credits if they were taken while you were in high school, but once you graduate, if you take just one class at CCC you are ineligible for freshman admission and you must wait till you have 60 units to transfer.
