I think my friend may be deluded...

Alright, my friend, who is a male and a senior applied to Rice University and is absolutely convinced that he will get into Rice. He says that his SAT score is in the top 75% of accepted applicants, but his GPA may hurt him. He applied to UChicago as his ED, and applied to Rice RD.

His SAT is 1990, and his W GPA is 3.7 while his UW GPA is 3.4. I don't know much more about him, accept that he's had a huge upward trend in his highschool career? I guess his EC's are okay.

Based on his SAT and his GPA, can he get in?
I think he's crazy, he keeps on saying that Rice is a tier 2 school and that it's very unlikely he'll get rejected.

UChicago is EA. Did he get in there? If he did, maybe he isn't so deluded.

LOL @ Rice being tier 2. It's definitely Tier 1.

I hope your friends gets the living sh1t rejected out of him, and please let me know when he does so that I can laugh while he sits at a local community college wishing he hadn't been so cocky.

Well, 1990 isn't exactly top 75% of applicants. It should be like 2150 or something.

Stats don't look that good but you can never tell from those alone. He sounds arrogant...

Exactly, I agree with Beef. He's clearly an idiot- a 1990 is a 663.33 per category-about the 25th percentile. Is he a URM recruited athlete? THEN he has a shot. Aside from that, tell me when he's rejected, as he'll surely be. And yeah, tell him to have fun at your local CC.

Oh, and Rice is 17th in the nation for top universities, right after Brown. Second tier my ass.

i'd reccomend telling your friend to go look at other schools, because Rice seems to be a longshot for him.

Beef, I hope you don't mean to say there is anything wrong with community colleges

But I have to agree. Your friend probably shouldn't be too dead set on going to Rice...it isn't looking too hopeful...but you never know!

If Rice is a "tier 2" school, I'm wondering why smartypants is applying there in the first place. I think the poor kid needs to do a little research to see what kind of school Rice really is.

^By the sound of it, he considers it his safety. Absolutely Ridiculous.

Some of my SAT stats were under the 25th percentile so you never know... he does sound cocky though.

Well yeah, in order for those scores to be the 25th percentile and not the 1st, there need to be people there with worse scores, but to be below the 25th percentile and consider yourself a shoe-in? Absurd.

I knew someone was going to bring that up.
There is nothing wrong with community colleges: if you have to go to one because of financial reasons, personal reasons, to be close to your family, because you have to work full time, or whatever other reason, then you gotta do what you gotta do and I respect you for getting an education.

But when you're arrogant and consider a school like Rice to be a 'safety', then you obviously would consider a community college to be complete dirt. And since that's exactly where this person might end up, he's not going to have a very good time coming to terms with the fact that he has to go there once he gets rejected everywhere else.

Again, nothing against community colleges. They are obviously not as good as schools like Rice, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and if a CC is the only way you can get an education, I have no less respect for you than for someone who goes to Oxford. I know I'm fortunate to be able to afford Rice (because of financial aid and merit scholarships); if it weren't for my Fin Aid, I would probably be at a CC (or a state school if they gave me enough aid).

My academics are a lot better than his and i still have nightmares about being rejected. lol

The 75% at Rice has a 2150 or higher so that is completely incorrect...

That is for starters, and #2. Unless he is URM or like the next Lebron James he definitely can not consider Rice a safety.

I feel he will get rejected or waitlisted, to be honest. Again this is just another kid who probably lives nowhere near Texas so does not know anything about Rice and how good it is. He probably thinks Rice is ranked #70 or something when it is actually #17

where did you find the data that says that 75 % of rice has a 2150 or higher? i feel stupid...

I think he (she?) was referring to the 75th percentile, actually.

okay, my mistake

College Search - Rice University - Rice - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®

Test Scores:
Middle 50% of First-Year Students
SAT Critical Reading: 640 - 750
SAT Math: 670 - 780
SAT Writing: 640 - 730
ACT Composite: 29 - 34

which means that at the 75th percentile, it would be 2260. My mistake.

I don't think so...

2260 would be under the assumption that a person at the 75th percentile in Critical Reading would also be at the 75th percentile in Math, and that's just not true. But regardless, the # is still way high.

well, if you go by tier 1 = ranks 1-10, tier 2= 11-20, tier 3- 21-30 etc...
Not that anyone should base their life on ranks ;-P amiright?
