He had 1990 SAT, with a 740 writing, 670 math, and a 580 reading.
His UW GPA was 3.4, his W GPA was a 3.7
Without his freshman year, though, his WGPA would be a 4.1
He had a 4.3 W junior year, taking AP Macro/micro and USH, scoring straight 4's.
His EC's were decent, but not mindblowing. He did help build houses in New Orleans after Katrina, and he got a gold medal in the Honors division for the essay in Academic Decathalon, even though his GPA didn't qualify him (my teacher registered him in the honors anyway).

He's smart, but truth be told, from his stats I don't think he's shown that he's smart.

However, he will not be attending Emory, due to lack of financial aid, going to URI.
I don't really understand how he got in to Emory off the waitlist.
Here's a link to what some other info about him.

You do not seem to be very much of a “friend” just so you know.

terry: lots of peeps got off of Emory’s waitlist this year that in past years would not have even been on the waitlist in the first place; the economic situation led tons of RD people away from Emory freeing up spots on the waitlist…

His stats, fwiw, are more like what Emory admissions accepted on a regular basis prior to the “feeding frenzy” of the past 5 years for top schools…Congrats to him…

emory,

Low stats? Okay GPA could have been better but the SAT is really fine, I mean right on par with Emory. Views on what score is considered low on the SAT is very skewed here on CC =/

^^ On par? That’s an insult. The OP’s friend is in the low 25% for CR and barely touches the middle 50% for math.

^^ First of all I don’t know what you mean as an insult. Yes I forgot to note that his reading score is not good enough for Emory. But his math score seems to be his strongest point: Emory’s math SAT range is what brown2009 stated above 670-760.
And to the OP you should be happy that he at least got in and keep in mind that something got your friend off the waiting list (essay, interest, him helping build houses after Katrina might have been the thing that caught the adcoms eye)

What I meant by insult is that you said the “friend’s” below middle 50% reading score and low end math score are “right on par with Emory.”
It would’ve been better if you said something along the lines of “decent” or “a bit low but could be better.”

Also, if you read the OP’s other thread, who he/she generously provided a link to, you’ll see that his/her friend is arrogant and cocky.

^I’m sorry that i misconstrued what you said. And thanks for pointing out the OP’s other thread ( I don’t know why and how I missed it earlier :S). To the OP sorry if I called you out like that: with a friend like that I would definitely react the way you reacted, arrogant people are personally my pet peeves=/

^No biggie. I feel the same way about arrogant people too

To the OP again,
from the thread you posted:your friend really thought that Rice was tier 2? How dare he think that, gosh he IS arrogant. I’m surprised it didn’t come off in his Emory application, but on the other hand, it served him right to get waitlisted at the school.

thanx. he gets on my nerves when he talks like that.

To the person (who is the OP’s friend) who thought Rice is Tier 2, this is what I have to say to him/her:

You are VERY, VERY Ignorant and Arrogant! SHAME ON YOU!

To the OP:

By the way, make sure you tell your friend that Rice’s admission rate is about 21 percent for 2009. No offense or anything, but Rice is harder to get into than Emory (whose 2009 admission rate is 28.5 percent). I’m not being condescending or arrogant about Emory; I have loved Emory ever since my freshman year of high school and almost decided to go there (and still having second thoughts). By the way, mention these Rice SAT score stats to him/her as well:

SAT Reading: 650 - 750
SAT Math: 670 - 780
SAT Writing: 640 - 750

Finally, be sure to tell him/her that Rice is on the same league as Emory, Northwestern, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Washington University in St. Louis, Cornell, and Brown.

I realize this is not the OP’s thoughts about Rice… it just ticks me off when idiots assume that just because they haven’t heard of a school before, it is second tier.

@slik nik - Where did you find the admission rates?

I think I estimated Rice’s admission rate because the number of applications went up by a 1,000 from last year. Last year, the admission rate was 23% for Rice, and I found that somewhere online (I think the College Board website only has the 2007 admission rate posted). In 2007, the admission rate for Rice was 25 percent

I found Emory’s admission rate this year in an article in the online version of the Emory Wheel: [Applicant Pool Down, Diversity Holds Steady | The Emory Wheel](http://www.emorywheel.com/detail.php?n=26952) .

Rice is a university on the same level, if not better, than Emory. Although I don’t believe in rankings, it is #17 in US News and World Report (just for a frame of reference). It is located in Houston, Texas. It is a small research institution, enrolling about 3200 undergrads. Check out the information that I posted earlier… if you simply read my earlier posts, u will know more about Rice.
