ur gpa and r low, but u still have time. work really hard this semester and even harder next nd ur rank may go up a lot (depending on ur competition; cross ur fingers thta lot of ppl get senioritis next yr)
but, u probably shouldnt take advice from me since i'm RD so i'm nit in yet nd also since i know very little about admissions.

Don't worry, I think its a reach b/c your sat scores were better than mine. I was probably an outright reject ED (1940 top SAT combined)...4.7 GPA...ranked 18/280, and ORM (Indian)....

I got deferred.

Go Figure, and don't give up. Good luck! Work hard on ur essays and EC's!

you'd fit in the gray area - the place that most kids are in...not a weak applicant, but not spectacular either. Teacher recs, essays, and summer programs will put you over the top. Remember, a lot of kids who have lower stats than you get in because they're refreshingly unique. I think I heard of a guy who wasn't that impressive, but he made a ton of money making animal balloons at parties. That's interesting to admissions officers

It's a reach, but not a HUGE reach like some people are saying. There are definitely people here that got in with stats a LOT worse than yours. Your rank could be higher, but your GPA isn't terrible. Your SAT scores are in the mid-range, but it seems like you'll do well on your APs. If your grades are getting better each year, that'll definitely help you. You don't seem to have a wide range of activities, but the volunteering and community service should balance that out. Just make sure to have well written essays that focus on things that you actually care about and not just the generic "winning" essay topics that people try to use so much.

That is 100% wrong. If I have learned anything from dulce de leche is that even if you are a URM, you need to have a very strong application to get in. dulce is a URM and a Legacy and applied ED and was deferred.

OP's SAT scores are solid, but the rank leaves some to be desired. I coasted through high school by doing the minimal amount of work and still maintained near straight As and may was in the top 5% during application season at a very competitive and grade inflated high school that has about 30+ people apply to Penn ED alone. The upward trend will look good though, but I recommend that you break the top 10% because if you look at the acceptance rates of students, top 10% gives you an OK shot, but bellow that and you're looking at a 5%> acceptance rate. Your ECs are pretty ordinary. The only thing you really can do is win an award by the end of the school year and get some leadership positions out of your ECs (prez, captain, etc). You have a chance, but Penn is very much a reach and your essays will have to set you apart (IMO you have to be an amazing writer for your essay to stand out among the hundreds an adcom reads every day). Just keep up the good work, apply, and see what happens.
