I got in as an English major for both schools with aspirations to eventually add on communication studies as a double major. I have almost all of my pre-reqs done for both majors at UCLA, but would have to wait until next summer to find out if i'm accepted into the program.

At Cal Poly, I would find out after a quarter if I can do the major. I also have tons of classes to take for my English major there.

Now, I've been weighing the options of both schools (I had hope for UCLA since I got the regents invite, however I didn't get the regents) ever since I found out I got into Cal Poly and by now I am going CRAZY! I live 45 minutes away from Cal Poly SLO and my boyfriend will be attending. I've already put a deposit down on an apt in SLO and when I saw the acceptance from UCLA I just kind of lost it thinking, "what am I doing?" To me, the UCLA campus is beyond amazing. The only drawback is that I don't want to be 3 hours away from home ( I know, I know, it's just three hours ). I feel so torn, like so many people on this site, and I guess I just wanted some feedback. Does anyone have any experience at all with adding on double majors or anything like that which may ease my mind about UCLA?

Also, a friend of mine is torn between the two as well as she got in for bizecon (also regents invite, but didn’t receive the regents.) She realized that she would have to maintain a certain GPA after she transfers for certain courses to formally declare the major and is really concerned as to if she should take the chances at UCLA. She currently has a 4.0 at our CC, but is doubtful of the academic rigor at UCLA. Any advice for her? Thanks again.

Academics-wise, I’d say go to UCLA. As you know the English and Communication Studies are amazing there. But if staying closer to home is an important factor in your case, then obviously Cal Poly is where you want to go. BUT 3 hours is not too bad. If your heart is telling you go to UCLA then go there. =)
ALso, how important is double majoring for you? Or would you satisfied with an English major only?

As for your friend she should take the chance and go to UCLA. There will be an adjustment period and obviously the rigor is way different than CC. But she that’s part of the transfer process anyway, so go for it!

I am a huge fan of SLO – for engineering, architecture, agriculture and business, etc.

English seems pretty exclusive at SLO too. One kid who lead our dorm tour was an English major and he said that the dept has only a 7% acceptance rate which he proudly stated was harder to get into than Harvard. (I have absolutely no proof of this at all. It is purely anecdotal info from a tour guide). However, I am at a loss as to how the “hands on learn by doing” education method is applied to English. Never heard of an English lab outside of an English as a Second Language (ESL) class.

Which school is actually better for English? You should seriously consider UCLA especially since it seems like your dream school. You have to decide if you’ll regret it for the rest of your life if you give it up. No worries regarding the distance. Believe it or not you will probably go farther from home when you get a job. Good training.

i thought your an engineering major when i read the title. i would have hard time deciding between SLO and UCLA as an engineering major, if i were accepted to both, but for other majors, i say UCLA.

My $0.02: 3 hours is the PERFECT distance from home. It’s not too far that you can’t visit when you really want to, and not to close that you feel obligated to spend an unreasonable amount of time there.

I am facing the same dilemma like you but it is between UCLA and UCSD. I got into LA with my alternative major while I got into UCSD with my dream major Communications. I am just blown away that I got into UCLA.

Itzcarol:
The hard part is the fact that whether or not I’ll get to add on communications or you’ll get to get into the major is something that is unknowable at this time. It really is a setback, but I think I am willing to graduate from UCLA with just my English major. I know I’m going to have to work very hard to make myself competitive for next year’s pool of applicants for the communications major,as it is very competitive of course, but I would rather know I tried to do both my majors at one of the best schools for either major in California. I think you need to just ask yourself: Would UCLA be worth it if you ended up with just your degree in women’s studies?

I really hope to see you at UCLA this fall!

I agree… this is a setback but after talking to people about this… I am going to try for CS next june like you. If i do get in, that will be great. If I don’t, it will be alright. However, I am not going to stay with women’s studies because it was a random major choice. I am going to change major, if possible, during orientation to anthropology with the cultural emphasis and minor in film.

I really hope to see you too this Fall! Wait, are you going to UCLA transfer day??

Haha, I did submit my SIR for UCLA yesterday I had to so that I wouldn’t be swayed by Cal Poly anymore! Plus Cal Poly’s SIR is due tomorrow so once that passes, I’ll have no option to even attend anymore.

itzcaroll: I don’t know when it is, but I definitely will be going. I think it’s awesome that you’re going to try for communications next June. Will you keep your anthropology major as well or try and drop it?

I didn’t know there is one either but I saw a thread about it. lol. I will try but if I don’t get into it, I will get over it. lol. I think I will try to keep my anthropology major and I am planning to minor in film. Should be very interesting. How about you??
