I tutored my parents for the GED Tests

With my help, my parents got their GEDs.

Should I mention this in a college application? Would it be work experience or volunteer experience? My parents reward me for my help but don't pay me as if I was a legitimate tutor.

Does anyone think this is noteworthy at all? We're immigrants in case you're wondering, that's the main reason why my parents needed their GEDs.

It’s neither work nor volunteer experience. It’s simply being a loving son. Trying to spin it as work or volunteer experience makes it seem like you’re a crass person whose every action is done to impress colleges.

Daughter, not son.

I understand that there’s a good chance some admissions officer will sneer and chuckle at the idea of helping your parents being some sort of volunteer experience…

Oh well! No biggie. I guess I’ll keep that out of my app.

make it an essay.

I second that (if done correctly) it could make a solid essay.

It could be a solid essay, it also means you are a first generation college student, right? Colleges really like that, too.

Writing an essay about it can still make you seem crass. Make sure it’s written well and read by other people.

Helping anyone through the GED is not trivial! This is more than just washing up the dishes or making your bed. While it isn’t the typical extracurricular activity, it certainly would be worth mentioning.
