hi there, this is my current situation, i am a student in UCSD, however i hate my current major (comp. sci.) and want to change it (besides i just do not see myself programming for a living in the future), i am a junior at the moment and going to be a senior after two classes i'm required to take in summer. i want to change my major to business, problem is UCSD does not have a business major (only minor). transferring to a different institution such as UCI or SJ state that has a business major is also very slim because of my senior status and my gpa isn't all that great either. if i want to go into business later, what should i major in now? i enjoy psychology a great deal, however from simple observation i understand that psychology is a "weaker" major ("weaker" in the sense that after graduation it is harder to find a job, ESPECIALLY when compared with cs). i know of people who graduated from UCSD with a psych. degree and now cant find a job. what should i do? i'm completely befuddled and confused. my two plans that i have thought up are (1) major in psych. and minor in business and try to apply to a MBA program or (2) major in management sci. (however looking at the classes required for management sci. it seems like i wouldn't enjoy them as much as psych. classes and i don't want to put myself in the same situation i am in now, where i hate my major). also if i major in psych. and graduate and cant find a job it will be significantly harder to get in a MBA program since they value real world experience greatly. can someone please give me some guidance or advice. thanks

When you say you want to go into business later, what exactly do you mean? “Business” is a pretty broad term. It is hard to make recommendations without knowing what you really want to do.

My wife was a psychology major (years ago). She realized that this degree won’t do much unless you are planning to go to grad school, eventually become a doctor, psychologist, researcher, etc. Although the info about how people interact can be useful in any field.

I think it is always best to study a subject you are interested in. If you think you would enjoy psychology, majoring in than an minoring in business would be fine, at least from a generic “business” perspective. The management science path is fine too, but if you aren’t interested in the classes don’t waste your time.

But this will likely extend your schooling by a couple years (your advisor should be able to help with this). If you want to get out sooner, you might want to tack a business minor onto your CS degree if you are willing to finish that you. Could come back later for an MBA.

You don’t need a business degree to work in “business.” It would be good to have a degree which is somewhat tailored to the industry you would like to work in. If you want something general, economics with statistics, programming, and accounting/finance courses would be good. You already have the programming and likely the math courses down already. Majoring in math/statistics would also be good, if possible.
