i just recently got into ucsd, but i have no idea on which major I should look into because I don't know what profession comes out of it. Sure we all know that pre-med = doctor and pre law = lawyer and blah blah, but what other majors are their that can lead you to the big bucks? If i major in economics, what professions can I become? UCSD doesn't seem to have good business. Can people please help me out!!!!

your major is only a small part of "success." Having a DEGREE is whats important. Honestly, I dont think your choice of major will affect you tremendously. My friend's dad is a CEO and majored in philosophy. I have a friend who recently graduated from USC with a degree in business, but just started working at a nursery. Your degree will give you opportunities for internships, and your internship will give you experience to work for success. Therefore, major in something you are interested in

Much of what is below is what I've either read or heard of from those who are already going through the process. Any clarification or additional information from anyone else would be appreciated.

Yes, UCSD doesn't have an established 'business major'. However, there are alot of alternatives to that for those looking to end up in Business School after Undergrad, namely in the Economics major and Management Science major. The Economics Department is one of UCSDs most popular departments url=http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/sriweb/2005profile.pdf, and is highly regarded

Many people have mentioned the trouble they have trying to be hired with these majors, namely Management Science, in the real world without going to a Grad School of some sort, though. Some say the reason is that both of these majors are more theory-based and not built to give you the tools to be ready for the real world.

Someone on this route would likely go into the workforce for a couple years, show an ability to move up the business ladder, and then apply to a business school to earn an MBA. Many of the top Business Schools these days will only accept those with some working credentials. They evaluate your acceptance primarily based on work credentials, grades, and GMATs.

More on the specific Majors within the Economics Department **here.[/b]

Also, about the 'Pre-Law' bit, many Law Schools don't have a required major for you to have to be able to apply. People apply to Law School with all sorts of majors - History, Political Science, Economics - and get accepted. As long as you have high grades and a good LSAT score, Law School is an option.

In the end, though, college is about finding out what you want to do for the rest of your life. Use the GEs to find out where you think you're interests might be, and start trying out courses until you find what you want to do.

Here is a nice list of possible majors. Why not start checking out the various majors and departments on your own now?

And for all the information you could ever want on UCSD, check out the 06-07 General Catalog. It has about everything a new student might want to know.

If i wanted to get into investment banking..should I major in economics? If i major in chemistry, what professions will I be open to?

If you want to be successful at UCSD, choose the major that fits your interests best.

If you want to read about different careers, go to the bureau of labor statistics page and look at their occupational outlook handbook.

There was a good career guider on UCSDs server I ran into long ago, let me see if I can find that again....
