I am a senior right now. I applied to 4 UC's: UCSD, UCD, UCI, and UCR. I got rejected to UCD and UCSD but got accepted to UCR of course. Since I didn't got accepted to UCSD which was my first choice, I think I'm going to UCR. However, I'm still waiting on UCI. If I do get accepted, of course I will go there. Anyways, if I go either UCI or UCR...I would still want to transfer to UCSD. I just know that I have to go to my dream college! My question, is whether that would be hard? Will I be able to transfer after one year at UCR or does it have to be after 2 years?

Typical transfers apply as Upper Division transfer students. I'm not sure how the lower division transfer process works.

If you really want to go to UCSD, you can be guaranteed admission as a CC transfer student through TAG.
Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) 2009-2010

Notice that this is ONLY offered to CCC students and not UC to UC transfers.

I was a senior in high school back in 2006 and was in your same situation. I applied to a bunch of UCs like UCSB, UCI, and UCSD but I only got into UCR. I knew I wanted to transfer to a higher-level UC but didnt know whether to go to UCR and transfer or to take 2 years at a CC and transfer. I ultimately chose to attend a CC because the UCs prioritize transfer to these students. Honestly, getting into UCSD is NOT hard from a CC, although it depends on your major. Consider sticking it out for 2 years if you want the full benefit of 1) receiving priority over other UC-UC transfers, and 2) saving tons of money.

I'm not saying its impossible to go the other way, but hey, I got admitted to UCSD on Saturday and I'm happy that I chose to attend a CC.

You're better off going to CC. Take honors and sign up for TAP/TAG.

I had a friend that got into Cal straight out of HS. She didn't feel the 'connection' there, so after a semester, she went to CC for about a year and a half. She's at UCLA now and happier than ever. She saved a lot more money going to CC rather than UC to UC.

It's definantly easier and better for your pockets to go to a CC. Transferring is really simple, it's my first year here at cc and it is really cheap. Per unit cost at my cc is $11! TAG makes it simple for transferring and of course the priority over of other transfers sweetens the deal.

The only bad part about cc is that it is a cc and commuting is crap.

Man i'm in the same boat twilight.

Only UC I got into is UCR.I really don't want to miss out on my first 2 years of "college life" and at the same time I want to transfer out of UCR in two years time.I know that CC students get priority over UC students but what if I had a GPA of 3.7-4.0 in college would that even matter?

i made a different choice. I went to UCSB for a year and then realized i really wanted to get out and i made the choice to drop out after my freshman year and attend a CCC for sophmore year. I'm in the spring of my sophmore year now and i've just been accepted to UCSD and awaiting UCLA and UC Berkeley. One thing i will say about this is that you will never ever be able to replace that freshman dorming experience and having 5 am water balloon fights and sharing your lives with a group of stranger. This is something the CCC simply can never offer you. They treat you like babies at the CCCs. You're really on your own once you go to a UC.

I know that many people support cc because of the priority thing, but I think going to UCR might be the better choice. I, myself, am at cc and I know people who chose to go to UCR, and they applied for sophmore transfer and got in. One of my friends at ucr got a 3.3 gpa for fall quarter (he did no studying whatsoever) at UCR and he got accepted to UCD for sophmore transfer. This got me pretty angry because I missed out on college life and I would have gotten mostly As and been able to transfer to a better UC than UCD. The thing is, that he made lots of friends at UCR and might not want to transfer. The good thing about going to CC, is that all you want to do is get the hell out of there, so theres no problem with leaving. Its a pretty tough choice and I'm sorry If ive just confused you more, but staying home at CC isnt exactly enjoyable at all.

Which is exactly why I'm having a hard time being convinced of doing the CC route...I don't want to miss out on anything.Obviously studying is priority #1...but a large part of going to college is meeting and living with strangers and developing lifetime friends.

Has anyone successfully transferred out of UCR into Cal or UCLA?

whats your major? your ability to transfer to cal or LA really depends on how impacted your major is.

UCR-Political Science

Ideally I'd want to transfer out as a lower division student, but is that even possible?

you can try but you better get a 4.0 your first semester. I would recommend taking like 9 units over the summer at a community college to bump up your gpa.

so basically 4.0+prereqs =guaranteed admissions?

What about TAG

if you go to uci or ucr you better be prepared to study extremely hard to get really good grades so you can be competitive to go to ucsd. On of my best friends our Sr. year was one of our valedictorians, had amazing EC's, and incredible test scores. She got in to all her schools (including cal) expect for her #1... ucla. So she went to Cal Poly slo and her second year she applied again to go to ucla but she made sure that she branched her self out even more at slo and did nothing but study. She had a 3.7-8 ish but know that she didn't do that whole "college experience" of partying and stuff. She made it her goal to get into ucla and she did. But It was a lot of work. So it's possible. But it is easier though a CC. Through a CC you can sign a TAG with a 3.0 and for sure be admitted.

Good Luck.

Yeah that's the problem. I mean I really wanna go to a UC but since I didn't get accepted UCSD now I'm kinda forced to go to UCR which I don't really want to go. As for CC, I am pretty sure I'm not going there because I want to have that freedom and independence when I enter college and for cc it's just like high school. I want to get out of here so bad! I want to have a social life and meet new people, not just go back home to parents and study. I'm not reconsidering to go to a CC, because I'm not working this hard in all 4 years of high school just to go to a CC. You see what I mean? That would be kinda of a waste of my hard work. I know that it's much harder to transfer from a UC to a UC..but I'll study my ass off to get in UCSD. UCSD is just not something I can just say goodbye.

Try UCR, then. I only suggested going to a CC because it seemed like the advantage of being a CC student outweighs the benefits of having that social life the first couple years of college (I missed out on it, it sucks). I'm sure as long as you study your ass of and keep that goal of UCSD in mind, you'll do fine.

alot of people say that they're gonna work hard and get a 4.0 in college and transfer but very few do it. I know you'll doubt me but you'll realize how hard it is in a few months. The highest i managed at UCSB was a 3.7 because i got straight A-'s. You shouldn't think of your high school years as being wasted. Perhaps they were a lesson to stop screwing around.

Yep that's my goal. :)

Then tell yourself that for the next to years and do it. I'm sure you can. Just be on your grades and don't go to crazy with the independence... and i'm sure you can do it.

To me the college experience is more important than saving money.I know I'm going to study very hard in college...that is a fact IMO. I went from a 3.0 freshmen year of HS to a 4.3 currently(chance of getting a 4.5 my 8th semester)...that has to be an indication of something.

I think what I am going to do is just start reading ALOT during the summer...
