I want to transfer! Help!

Right now I'm attending SMC (Yuuuuuck! Can't wait to get out!) and plan to apply for Fall '08 to admission as a Junior.

I graduated high school in '05 and took a year off to go live and work in the UK, for the experience. I just got back this summer and started school a week later... Do you think they will like the fact that I took a year off to go live abroad or do you think they would look down on it?

Anyway, right now I have a 3.63 but plan to raise it to at least like a 3.8? (By the end of this summer) I don't have many ECs other than the fact that I work 30 hours a week and go to school full time... but I am also (on the side) learning Arabic and I was planning on maybe going to volunteer in South Africa this summer. I want to major in International Relations (hopefully double major in Political Science too but I don't know how likely that would be as a transfer). How competitive is this major?

My high school is REALLY weak so that's why I'm not applying as a sophomore. My GPA was like 2.9 unweighted and my SAT was like 1030 (old SAT), with like no ECs. I really hope that they don't hold that against me because I've changed soo much since high school and actually CARE about school now haha.

Anyway, any advice anyone could give me would be very helpful :) (from current students or prospective transferees!) of what would better my chances. Thanks!

if you have a 3.6 on a year's worth of college work, and you've done core classes like writing, then you might actually have a shot applying earlier. your hs gpa and sat mean less now that you've demonstrated ability in college. lots of people transfer in after only one year.

I don't fully understand what you're saying though...you just started college this summer but you already have a 3.63 gpa?

I just started school in June (I took 8 units over summer) so just by that my GPA is a 3.63. So for them not put a lot of emphasis on my high school records, I need to have 30 units, but I only have 8 so far haha. This is my first real semester I guess! I've satisfied my western cultures and traditions requirement, 2nd semester language, and right now I'm doing my scientific inquiry requirement, 3rd semester of a language, and what would be the equivilent of WRIT130. I'm hoping to get all of my GE out of the way by the end of summer.

Thanks for replying by the way :)
